This will be my first winter with chickens. I am curious as to what everyone does to prepare for winter ...

My list:
Clean coop
Finish last bit of coop and runs
Combine flocks
Have at least one month's worth of feed in stock at all times
Replenish chicken medical supplies
Extra shavings
Extra heat lamps and bulbs
Extra water heaters/de-icers
Install thermocubes on outlets
Check/service generator and fill jerry cans up

I refuse to act until at least October. Then I have to accept that nights are going to be VERY cold. Sometimes.

Then I put away the plastic huge volume waterers and pull out the fill twice a day but ice tolerant rubber tubs.

Pull out the roosters and and toms and put in bachelor quarters, if I haven't already.

Put out full compliment of baited mouse traps.

Drain hoses (now on hauling water in buckets from ice free hydrant).

Find the thermocubes and extra heat lamp bulbs, just in case.

Put the little banties in the pens that can be heated most easily. Put the turkeys in the coops with no electricity.

Hmmm.

Oh make appointment with destiny for excess roosters and cull hens, if I haven't already.

My main concern now is to tend to my precious deep litter. It has stood vacant all summer in my breeding barn. I need to turn it over and top it with peat and straw.

Finish the coop
Get lights installed
Get the heaters and set them up
Get extra shavings
Top up all the food bins
Set up heated waterers

I try to have fresh, dry bedding down for them, any holes or windy gaps closed up, some of the vents stuffed half way to prevent the wind from creating drifts.

I don't provide heat, I don't use heated waterers (too spensive). I run 2 or 3 waterers and rotate through. I like to provide whole corn every night when I can for the birds, helps to keep them warm -- might go with lentils this year instead.
