My only concern would be that some people might not do their fair share. Third time doing someone else's turn at shoveling out and I'd be burying them in the compost bin.

A good shunning would eliminate the slacker problem.

If he can't feed his family, it might be difficult to build a coop, purchase chicks, raise the to laying age and feed them throughout their life.
