Hey everyone

Just thought I would post the prices I pay for poultry Abattoirs around here. For a chicken under (6lbs I think) it's 3.00 and over it's 3.50. How ever duck and geese is where it get's expensive for me, at 8.00/bird. Turkey is around the same price (just a bit higher), and quail is a bit cheaper ( I am assuming this).

Interesting to see prices around the country. Here Abattoirs just have to be provincially inspected. What about other provinces?

Vancouver Island area:

Salt spring island abattoir - humane kill, locally owned by the community:

Chickens less than 3 kg $6 each
between 3 kg and 3.5 kg $7 each
over 3.5 kg $8 each
And they charge extra for heritage birds...

Turkeys 1-20 $14.50
21-50 $13.50
51 and up $12.50

Port Alberni abattoir: further away, one less ferry drive, but the road is treacherous from November to March...

Chicken
0-7 lb.$4.50
7 +lb. $5.00

Ducks:$8.50
Geese:  $10.00

Turkey
00-20lb. $8.50
20-25lb.. $9.50
25-30lb. $12.00
30-35lb. $18.00
35-40lb. $22.50
40  + lb. $26.00

There are others also....but not many.  There is one in coombs, but she doesn't seem to answer phone calls for us little guys as I've never had a return phone call.

Messenger Meats at Mirror is no longer doing custom butchering so I used Pigeon Lake Processors this year. Not as convenient for me location wise, but they did a lovely job. Very nicely prepared and packaged! $4.40 per bird.

My understanding is that the price is 3.00 in Smithers. However, I process my own birds so have no personal experience with them.

I just paid $7 a duck up at north okanagan poutry. I believe they were $3.5 for regular meaty, double for coloured breeds. I don't know turkey prices.

Ah, I heard they were 4.50$ for meaties... but not sure. I don't use them as I'm in the central ok.
I've also hear that Richard at valley wide in enderby does duck and rabbit, but haven't used his either.

A friend of mine had some cockerels done at Lakeland Poultry Processors in St. Paul, AB and they charged her $3.85 per bird. They were coloured ones, too.

Would you have any contact for Richard?  I've been trying to find a duck processor for a couple of years.  Last year N. Ok did mine but skinned them all.

FLF, did your ducks come back with skins?  Maybe they've solved the problems they had when I used them.

Thanks.

List of every provincially licensed abattoir in the province of bc
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Also for ducks I believe Pluckin maniacs in Kamloops does em.... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I've heard that unless you either dry pluck or use a hot wax dip you won't be able to do water fowl effectively.... they're used to getting wet.... so hot water alone won't loosen their feathers properly (especially the down)

I will ask this here because I think you all will know.

Is there a processor down here close to Calgary?

Coop, one of the Hutterite colonies near you does poultry. I think $2/bird, and it's government inspected. I can find out which colony it is. I have a friend living west of Airdrie and she uses the Hutterites to process her birds.

Thanks bcboy,
It would be interesting to know what that liquid was he was putting in the scalder and how long it took them to "hand clean" that all up.
I gov't is really persnickety about what chemicals one can use professionally and I know the couple of times we did ducks (we're trying a batch again of 6 this saturday) it took like over an hour of hand picking per duck to get those ducks what I'd call clean enough to sell.

I believe the Liquid they are putting in is Dawn to break up the oil as they say suds and I think it says dawn on the Bottle

Here is what it says on his site

featherman wrote:Add enough dish detergent to make the water bubbly on top (about 1/4 cup). This will help the scald water penetrate.

Oh thanks, yea gov't won't let you put dishsoap in the water, so on a professional level I can understand why small abattoirs won't be able to use that system.
I know the big one (fraservalley duck and goose) use wax.
