Ya, yes for sure, cool how the eye colour changes. Kathy (sorry to hijack) you should see the yellow feet on two of the cochin chicks that are 14 week old (buff broody raised), running with the buffs. I never ever thought that such YELLOW soles of feet are possible, looks like someone dipped them in dark yellow paint, laughing. Sorry, didn't want to start a new topic and my computer is messed up, using another one til my new one gets here, so very clumbsy....have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Those are some really nice looking birds...another of my fancy I admit...will probably hit you up one day for some babies/eggs... I agree with Cynthia, there is something gorgeous about the deep mahogany colour that just catches my eye..
thanks for the pics Kathy

Hey Kathy, nice this thread has been brought back. Would love to see some more pics of the chicks, they are probably really feathering out beautifully now. Yes, Big Rock, something about the red for sure in that breed. Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Yes, I'll have to snap some new pictures soon! They have grown and changed so much in the past few weeks. They are starting to look more like young adults now, but still lacking full tails and rich glossy finish.  Smile

Kathy I truly love these birds and are looking forward to seeing them at the shows for years to come. I honestly think they are one of my favorite true heritage breeds.
Looking forward to some updated photos!

Haven't got any updated pictures, but they have turned out awesome!!!! I am thrilled with them, won't be selling anything until I can test breed a

few of them. Won't be selling hatching eggs I'm afraid, as these birds take a good year to grow out and see what you really have. They can change

a lot. Won't be showing for awhile either, want to work on test breedings first. But eventually. Because they are beautiful.  cheers

I couldn't be happier to get back a colour and breed I had as a child, and raised for years. These are 100% better birds though.  Very Happy

lady leghorn, do you have some of Kathy's birds that you are breeding? Get that impression, if so, good for you, Kathy has some lovely RIRs. Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

I'm not sure where Lady Leghorn got her Reds from, but they definitely aren't from me.  Question
I hatched a good number of chicks this year, but I am growing them all out in order to make informed decisions on which birds to keep, which to cull, and which can become a start for other serious breeders.

I have done some showing with the parent stock and its been really encouraging. At the CHB Lawn show, my RIR cock bird won best in his class, plus went on to take Reserve Show Champion! This was especially exciting considering the rarity of Rose Comb Reds. I'm looking forward to showing some of the offspring in November at the Canadian National Show. It's really great to have that confirmation from the judges that these birds are indeed an excellent start in this breed. Now my focus is on building up a larger flock while maintaining the overall quality. Thanks again for the encouragement and kind remarks everyone! Smile

Thank you Lady Leghorn, your comment made me think you had KathyS's RIR. So Kathy, wow!! Good for you. I think that the rose comb is such a wonderful type of comb for the harsh climate that so many of us folk have in the wintertime, yahoo!!! And this recognition that you have received from judges on the bird line is fantastic. Keep on that. I think that the Rhode Island Red breed is as pretty and nice as the Buckeye, smiling....just something about that red colour in the two breeds. I love both of those breeds. Wonder...how big is the adult RIR? I would be curious, as I did not find the buckeyes overly large and not sure they ever would be. Oh well, just good on you, this is about your RIRs, not buckeyes, so maybe take to a PM. Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.
