a BLRW rooster to a Silver Laced Cochin will all the babies have feathered legs? I am asking because I have a pen with 1 (Splash)BLRW roo and 1 BLRW hen and also a SL Cochin. I cant for the life of me tell which hen lays which egg. Every egg I pull out looks identical to the nextone. I am going to hatch them out but Im wondering if I will know who is who once they are hatched. Anyone have experience with this cross? If so did you like the results? Thanks

Jaclyn

Jaclyn I believe all the chicks would have feathered legs. You could also put some foot colouring on one hens vent when she is on the roost for the night and the egg she lays that day should have some colur on there.

Im not sure about Wyandottes and Cochins but I have bred my d'Anver rooster (has no feathers on his legs) to my d'Uccle hen (has feathered legs) and every time the chicks always have feathered legs. So if its the same in Cochin/Wyandotte then I would say yes.

I will possibly know today as I have one BLRW egg in my bator. Although its possible it came from the BLRW hen and not the Cochin. But only time will tell. My incubator is giving me issues right now. Its the older one with no fan and since last night 3 eggs pipped and the temp suddenly dropped to 95 and humidity spiked to 95%. This morning I have 1 duck and 3 chicks hatched out of 6 of each. They still arent even due until tomorrow so I am worried this temp dropping and humidity spiking is going to be an issue for the unpipped eggs. But what the heck do I do? I have every hole open that can be open for air exchange. Eeeek! Stupid old used incubators with broken fans! Ok rant done. I will let you all know what this chick ends up looking like if it makes it

Can you imagine how beautiful a Blue Laced Red Cochin would be?

I was thinking of crossing the Silver laced cochin hen (I have a couple) with the BLRW to see if I can't come up with some BLR Cochins. I played around with the chicken Calculator, and the chicks should come out with females of Blue laced red and black laced red color and Males would be Blue Patterned yellow/gold laced and black patterned yellow/gold laced. It only works that way if the Roo is BLR.

I think if a person used Gold Laced Cochins it would work even better.

Here's a link to the calculator. If you click on 'Show Examples' beside the roosters and hens, it gives you pictures to click on, and will show you pictures of the offspring. You can click on the offspring's pictures to further work it out. Have fun.

This link is pretty good too.
