Another surprise today.  Late last night, well actually early this morning, I heard pig squealing. Went out, checked everyone, all was fine except the weaners were out in the middle of the field instead of their house, as some bad pig removed all the bedding.  So at 2 or 3 or what ever time it was I was out there making them a new bed and keeping light on them so they went to bed like good pigs.  Thought it was odd that the boar and sows were up in the next pen, but oh well.  I didn't check enough, as in the little house in the back of the pig area, mom #4 had 5 little babies - apparently the source of the squealing, cause hokey smokies there is a squealer in that bunch!  I thought she was due in March, not in February, and she didn't show at all!!!  I guessed two, I missed two - and I thought I was keeping good notes.  Well atleast now I know the two older ones are still fertile.  Mom #3 just had babies 3 days ago.  And I just weaned the other two litters. Lots and lots of Ossabaw pigs!!!!

Congratulations! Now you are REALLY busy!!

I find even with my conventional pigs and really strict boar control the sows can still farrow up to two weeks early. Which for me means.... NOW too. Thanks for the heads up! Hope it all goes well!

I'm finding mine are 3 days early...so far. It seems that Wilbert finishes his job quick, so I don't have much time to observe and record - I'm 50/50 for seeing the breeding. And both of those are 3 days early. My last one though really surprised me - for an experienced sow she didn't bag up nor swell up to give and indication. Oh well, she's happy and babies are safe. The moment i put an experienced boar in with sows there is an immediate orgy. Suspect most of the sows are NOT in heat at that exact moment so I just note in my diary "piglets any time from now on..."

With a young inexperienced boar it can be days before the sows will let him near them.

So the only date I have is the first possible date... and then start watching two weeks before that. But I do notice some sows are always early, some always late.

Go figure.

A baby Ossabaw would fit just perfect in a dog kennel for a flight, pigs really can fly!!!
