Just wondering if anyone has any experience with solar fence chargers. Good or bad.

We use our every year. We actually 3 three solar and 1 direct power.
The best charger is a Gallegar (sp?), it shocks well through wet grass and weeds, also does the longest distance.
We purchased a cheaper one for the horses, they dont need as much shock, it is a co-op brand. But have also used it on cattle with no issues.
Our direct power one runs all year, the solar ones we only use in the summer.

As for using it for chickens, not sure if that was your question, I purchased some electro netting last year, and will give it a try this spring with our meat birds and see how it goes.

We would be using it for goats, but had planned on year round. Would you not recommend them in winter?

A sheep course I took said to use a 3-4 strand fence for winter, with the middle strand being grounded, the other two live. That way no matter if there is snow (an insulator) they would still be grounded by that one wire and be shocked. The only issue is if your snow piles up over your fence...
I think as long as you had a battery backup (which I think they all do) then periods of low light in the winter would still have charge to shock the animals. Our biggest concern with our chargers in the winter would be that the batteries would freeze, then you would have issues. But as long as they are charging and discharging they shouldnt freeze.
We simply prefer the electric direct plug one for winter, has a bit more kick to it, and we dont have to worry about the batteries.
