Joe Mazur of Cochin Fame has approx 15 L.F Black Cochin chicks approx. 6- 8 weeks old. He is asking $20.00 each. These come from the same birds he is raising his show birds from but he will only let them go to people who are going to show, no thinking about it but will actually make the commitment to raise them out with the intent on showing and then working with the breed. He does not want them to go to someone who just wants to sell hatching eggs or will resell them but someone who wants to get into excellent quality exhibition Poultry. A negotiable price to the right home. Contact me for contact info as he is a diary farmer and extemely hard to get hold of. Pick up at farm only no shipping. Armstrong, Enderby Area of B.C
A good start perhaps for someone looking for those hard to find bloodlines, with a chance to step right in and be competitive at any poultry show.

That's to bad Jayme as it would have been a great start for a young person but I didn't talk with him until the day after your birds left. We talked about them and I have been ruminating over how to post this without offending anyone, as he really wants them in a home or homes that will help support the exhibtion poultry end of the hobby. Chances like these don't come around very often from breeders and the reason for growing them out is that they will not all be show birds but people will have a great shot at getting something decent maybe to start with and possibly as good or better then he will raise out this year.

This is the first and likely only year he would let chicks go but he has 2 teenage girls, twin boys and the dairy. The teenage girls part should say it all for this year. It's about time management as we all know.

You never know what will come your daughters way or how, as she seems to have a healthy interest in showing her birds and most exhibiton breeders like to support them.

Heather

Hey Jayme, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one more trip to Heather's next month. If that happens and you can arrange another pick up near me, I'd be happy to help you out if the cochins are still available.

I would like at least 3 of these and may be able to go up to 5. I have a nice Black Cochin rooster now, a brother to one we showed at the North Thompson Fall Fair last summer. I wouldn't be able to pick these up until after the first week of July.

Gosh Kelly, I didn't want to put you on the spot but since you offered again, that's great. Next time I'll have the timing down pat and maybe we can have a conversation. I felt like I didn't even say a proper hello when we met as I was somewhat stressed about keeping you waiting. I'm glad to hear you'd do it again. Hopefully we will.

These were very nice chicks. Our granddaughter placed Best Junior with her pullet at the North Thompson Fall Fair. One of the pullets is now a beautiful young Cochin, but we have had some bad luck along the way. We found one pullet lying dead one morning in the run without an apparent cause of death. The rest of the poultry on the farm were and continue to be in good health. Recently I found another pullet lying on her side in the run and when I got up closer I found she had her head stuck between the back of the pen and a portable nesting box. I rescued her, but later found she was limping badly. Upon examining her today I discovered she had a broken leg that had punctured through the skin and then infected. Sadly we had to put her down and we now have just one pullet out of three, two nice young roosters and one mature rooster. One pullet will have lots of partners come spring. And on we go.

Sorry to hear that Survivor.
We picked up 3 pullets and 2 roosters as well, they are growing into beautiful hens for sure. My youngest owns them and she keeps talking of ribbons she is going to win in December. LOL.
We have her birds in fort knox, my hubby's workshop, and are currently working on a larger pen for them since they are getting very large in stature.
Heather we are very pleased with these birds and look forward to showing them in December. She is working with one in particular right now, the largest of the hens, and she is turning into a huge lap chicken. LOL My daughter is just thrilled.
It was funny when my mom was out helping us butcher chickens, she asked the girls, "are those ones going too, they look big enough.", My youngest "No way grandma, those are my SHOW chickens."
