Oh for Pete's sake!
Has this degenerated into proving who among us is 'nicer' than the next guy? Who is more giving? Who takes more chances on the down and out?
THe very REAL and SERIOUS issue of passing animals along to someone who might not be able to care for them has been brought up but is handily ignored over and over. At some point, if you give your animal to someone who is down an out, it is very likely that you have committed and act of gross negligence against that animal! I gave chickens to a down and out person and HE LET THEM STARVE TO DEATH!
Has this stopped me from helping the disadvantaged? No. However, I have to weigh the desire to feel all warm and fuzzy about myself, against the potential suffering I cause an animal to give it to someone who can't afford to buy eggs. If you can't afford to buy eggs, you can't afford to heat, house and feed a chicken! PERIOD. There is nothing to be discussed.
This reminds me of all the times the kid came home with a great offer, someone has offered to give her a free horse. Free horse? THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE HORSE! You want to see money fly out of your hands? Get a damn horse! Funny how people who are down and out might ask for chickens, but want to off-load that horse!
Anyway...this is NOT a contest about who of us is nicer or not, who is jaded or not, how we help others or not. If you are in the position yourself to daily or weekly provide a financial hand out to a family, then you go ahead and do it and Gordon bless you for being so big hearted. Because as I see it, GIVING a chicken, for free, to someone who may not be able to care for it is negligent. Better to RENT them the chicken and provide them with a bag of feed every two weeks and help them build a hen house and show them about pest control and warn them about predators and how to build secure fencing. Wait...it might be better to say NO to the chicken and YES to having them knock on your door with their hand out for weekly free eggs. Or money to buy eggs. That way you can feel good about giving and not place an animal into a position it has no way out of, except to die.
