Meh, I like learning random things about different cultures and countries. Never let the original thread get in the way of a good hijack!

Oh heck, very sorry for straying off topic.  Should at least try to keep it related.  I just love your Coopening thread authenticfarm and check to see new pictures all the time.  Every time I go to the barn to work on the Bachelor Pen I think to myself, "I'm Coopening!"  often followed by ". . . he got the velcro . . . " from that rap song Thrift Shop.  I am taking on a whole new jargon since I joined this forum.

Took a look to see what a Pomeranian dog is like.  Seems Pom's were popular with the Pom's :-).  Queen Victoria had a large kennel, so says wikipedia.  Tried to see where the term Pom came from, wikipedia can't seem to agree on anything  -  all suggestions look debunked but range from something to do with pomegranate and Prisoner of Mother England . . . to pompous.  Seems specific to NZers and Ausies to call the English Pom's so not surprising it is unknown here.  Although, still in the same commonwealth.  See more pictures of the Queen on the walls here than you do in NZ.  Aus contemplated and might still be thinking of breaking away.  Fledging, a huge political conversation . . . lets fledge back to Coopening, more fun :-).

Built a couple of the small projects today - a grit/oyster feeder and a nestbox.

I didn't take a photo of the grit feeder, but here's the nestbox, along with tiny adorable helper doing her "cheese!" face.

Ah, photographers, the worst critics of their own childrens' photogenicity.

Before I forget to make the comment. for my oyster shell I use an old dutch oven style pot, stainless steel. You can get them at the second hand store, very cheap. I screw it onto a wall, and it is safe and sound. I like that. If it gets dirty, it can be removed and washed. The pot with the handle on each side, a good size and holds lots.

Authentic, this has been a most incredible thread. I have watched it from the inception of your beginning to make your coop and boy, you've come a long ways baby! Wonderful thread, and you are an awesome worker, as is your little girl, what a cutie petootie! Have a most wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Cynthia, thank you for your kind and encouraging words! This is why you're the sunshine that balances out all the dark and twisty, sarcastic people like me. Smile

For you Magdelan ...

I have made two different styles.

The big hopper style one is for the large central area of the coop, where the laying flock lives.

The small one is for the smaller pens, for the breeding groups.

Both were made out of scraps. I have a lot of scraps. The nest box yesterday was made from scraps, too.

Hopper style, screwed to wall for stability. The piece of plywood on the side is because one pullet kept sticking her head in the angled hole to "hide," which didn't hurt her, but it scared me every time I saw her sorta crammed in there.

Simple two-chamber box, just screwed into the wall. This one was made out of scrap 1x6. I have another one that is made of scrap 1x4, and it is plenty big for the trio I have it in with.

We dug the trench for the power today!

Well, that was mostly Himself and our Bobcat. But *I* was the one who fixed the trencher attachment before we could start. The digger chain dealy came off its track, and husband was just dragging out the acetylene and torch when I finessed it on using my womanly logic. Brain over brawn!

The rest was alllllllll Himself.

Tomorrow, wire in the trench and maybe in a couple of days, I will have power in the coop. Yay! Then I won't be slowed down by silly things like darkness.

You are so blessed AF, with so many things! I'm sure you're grateful and thankful every day. Your man, your machines, your willing man (different from just having a man), but mostly your own resources to build and plan and participate on an equal basis (please don't be insulted by that statement - I know women who choose not to learn to back up their own horse trailers!!!).

This coop is a thing of beauty. I am using it (in a general way) as a template for my future plans. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.

Yes, I have a very good life! I chose a good husband, and we work hard to have this life for our family.

I have to thank the women who went before me. *History Lesson Time* I live in an area called the Ukrainian bloc. One of the most distinctive things, historically speaking, about this area is the role of women. The Ukrainian women worked alongside their men in settling this area. The feminist movement didn't really happen here, because women were already simply expected to work like men.

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=338670

My husband, being of Ukrainian heritage, thinks nothing of my working like a man and buying/using tools, juggling a full time job, two kids (one at home), the farm, chickens, life ... we do things very equally, he is just as likely to be caring for the children while I am outside building as the other way around.
