This has been quite the week, first the coyote grabbed one of our Cuckoo hens and mauled her pretty good. She is doing well but she needs a bandage. Thanks Uno for mentioning the honey. It is one thing I truly believe in but Wes (DH) was afraid to use it because we have tried to bandage her but like houdini, she slips out within a short time. I went to pick up some dog food and the vet said "use honey" and use a bandage, ya right, why didn't I think of that? Ok,thing is it's a design nightmare. The affected area is on her left flank (if chickens have flanks) just below the wing to the top of the leg, maybe a 4" area. Does anyone have a design that might work?

FOrget it. Bandage is not going to happen. Remember, as much as I love my vet, he is not used to dealing with poultry and you can be darn sure at vet school was never asked to bandage a chicken! It's just what they say, you can't hold it against them.

You do have to separate her or she will be attacked by other hens. I use an upside down laundry basket for temporary chicken confinement. Make sure you have found the puncture wounds, honey them up and hope a lung wasn't punctured. Good luck!

I second Uno. If it's hot there, watch for maggots. Make sure you rinse the wound with water or water/iodine diluted once a day or so, and apply fresh honey Smile Works wonders! I can't get a reasonable bandage design for poultry and the one time I did I think it just harbored more infection then helped Sad
