The other day as I was leisurely enjoying breakfast and reflecting the last few days of my summer holidays, Günter, Doug's Japanese Chin sat at my feet, growling at me. Growling!? What gives?

I gave him hell and kicked him out.

Well, today we were having breakfast together I found out why he was behaving this way. We were having toast and poached eggs. Doug proceeded to make a little breakfast for the dog. A tiny plate with a chunk of toast and a little piece of egg. To my dismay he placed the plate on the floor for Günter! Gunter ate his little meal and began to growl at Doug who gave him both our plates to lick. OMG! He is slowly ruining this dog! Is it too late? Can I fix the dog? What about the husband?

Perhaps placing Doug's plate next to Gunter's on the floor will make your point?
That would bug me though. Not the feeding, but the positively rewarding the growling.

I love it, AuntiEvil. You are well named! Yes, Gunter has a growling problem and this is exacerbating it. He is also a strong willed little guy and has a high threshold for discipline.

Don't laugh. Arctic is the breeder of this devilspawn dog. She is no stranger to doggie discipline and when she visited early this summer she had a 30 minute battle of wills with this little tyke over whether or not he was going to submit and lay on his back in her arms. I am not sure who won....Arctic? As a baby puppy he and I were in constant battle. To this day if I tell him 'no' he goes over and stands by daddy. Doug can often be heard saying, "Dont upset him...he's delicate!'

Oh Sue lol! sorry mind I still think you should make Doug go out and kiss all your goats every time he feeds your dog breakfast. Next Doug will be giving the dog breakfast in bed.
However my Mother in law always told us off for not sharing our meal with her 5 dogs years ago. I never did jocolor

I feed our dog at the table as well ,but only if I feel like it ! no matter how much growling goes on !! If she doesn't stop I pretend that I have something for her and lead her into the mud room which is where she sleeps and eats and then I close the door ! Lesson learned ,no more wineing.I would NEVER let the dog eat out of a plate that I eat out of though ,that would never happen here ,I'd throw that plate away ........but that's me though ,every one to themselves .

Doug already kisses the goats, snuggles the ducks, tickles the turkeys, smooches the chickens, he does NOT need any encouragement!

I picked up Gunther and yaaaaa, it was about 30 min of him squirming and fighting and complaining and grumbling, and shooting lazer beams of death at me from his coal black eyes of hate. And it was a begrudging win. But he did not COMPLETELY relax, he only relaxed just enough to scowl at me and give me a partial win.

His sisters are wonderful happy respectful things, grateful for every morsal they receive. We are completely enamoured with them and wrapped around thier little paws.

Aha! So you admit they are good only because you give them everything their little heats desire? Wrapped, eh? It that the key to Chin harmony?

Again, I say ROFL .
I can just see you Sue. Trying to instill the importance of proper doggie behaviour and Doug defending his baby boy while slipping him a piece of toast.
Priceless.

I left out the worst of it, Toybarons. He has also been known to hold the puppy on his knee and allow him to vacuum crumbs from the table.

I've been known to use my house chickens as both dusters and carpet cleaners.

yup agree to putting Dougs plate on the floor. But instead of putting it by the dogs, put the dogs at the table and when he asks why it is this way, kindly let him know he is making it that way!!

I would never allow anyone to feed the dogs from the table. I actually kicked hubby away from the table from feeding my cavalier king charles spaniel from the table when I caught him giving Rolo fat scraps from the steak. I told him next time I caught him doing this his steak would go to Rolo and he could have the fat scraps as he would make him a tyrant. Hubby was good natured about it, left the table, but I suspect only to set the example for the kids, and never fed Rolo again, at least when I was home. I assume he never as Rolo did not beg for food like he was starting to before.

Good luck training Doug!!
