Yep, we have chicks in the barn and my husband is out there saving weasels.

The cats were attacking one in front of the house and Doug picked it up with a rag and placed it at the edge of the creek valley. He thought it was a baby otter. Sad thing is, I would probably do the same thing...

There is a lot of blood on the front step. I think it is cat blood. Shocked

Don't tell anyone, but during my first work term in University I was second-in-charge of a small petting zoo in Flin Flon, Manitoba. This young girl had run over a momma weasel with her bike that was moving her babies. The girl carefully scooped up both animals and brought them to the newest animal experts in the community. This poor little girl asked the two of us what we could do with these two animals. The girl that was in charge told her that we could bury the mamma for her (she was VERY dead) and perhaps we could try to feed the baby. We gently told her that it would not likely eat and if it did not, we would have to put it down. I guess it would have only been days old. It did not have it's eyes open yet. Well, we took an educated guess as to what the milk of a weasel would be like and we mixed goats milk with egg yolk and sugar and fed it in a small syringe. Well the crazy little thing ATE! We then undertook the pain-in-the-rear task of feeding it every 3 hours round the clock for weeks. It eventually grew up. We bought it some live mice and it learned to eat those pretty fast. We released it at a pig barn where it was appreciated.

So I don't just rescue the little buggers~I have bottle fed them!!

BA, you are my husband's hero!

And as to the rest of you....pffffftttt! (Insert raspberry here!)

We have lots of weasels here and they do a great job killing the many, many mice!

Cute, yes, but very misguided.

I think I would like a baby otter. I would keep it in a cage with a childrens' play pool and it could entertain me.

Doug reminds me of my sister-in-law Elaine. This happened ages ago when I lived in Montreal. My brother had been married to her for a short time. She was at our apartment, the family was there and I was watching a program with penguins. My sister-in-law didn't know what it was. Everyone there thought she was pulling our leg. However, she was not. She really had no idea what a penguin was.

Sue hopefully you and Doug will not regret the day that he rescued the weasel from the cats who seemed to be doing their job quite well. Weasels don't just eat mice. They love chicken blood fresh right from the artery and the odd fresh chicken breast and head for desert. I learned the hard way and yes I was foolish enough to rescue a young weasel from a gopher trap and let it go as well as a baby skunk and also let it go but no more freebies in the future. It has cost me way too much in chicken dollars.

Sue way too funny. Poor Doug Razz
I have done many a stupid things in the last few years, just letting you know so Doug feels better. I found a mole that my dog dug up picked it up found it's hole and pushed it back down and draged my dog away.........this year ( 2 years later) I am setting traps Razz

This is my most stupid moment. I was cleaning out my barn from deep bedding from the Winter in where my goats were. Well I dug up a nest of mice, yes little tiny things. I saw the mom run off. I checked on them for a few hours , stopped work and hoped that mom would come back for them . No luck I know mice ah so I take them in to my house yes house and feed them goat milk which you could see go down into their tummys, but one by one they died over a few days.............and now I look at mice and get the shovel to wack them with.........after all how many mice do I need.
So back to kissing my goats I go Very Happy as happy as a pig in you know what Laughing

Glad to hear I am not the only one who rescues animals, both small and large. Once a momma mouse had her babies in the air filter on Hubby's dirt bike. I would not let him go biking until the babies had gone off to college. No sooner had babies gone off to college than momma mouse had a second family. It was a long summer of no biking.

We also have mice set up housekeeping in our barbecue. After setting mice on fire (much to his utter horror) and watching as flaming mice ran behind the siding on the house (EEEK!) we now check the barby before we light it!

Sue, bless your Hubby's generous heart.
