At one point Monsanto applied for patents in most world countries for pig genes. That has now been abandoned, so they say. It would have prevented the average farmer from growing a backyard pig for meat. I do not think it is abandoned personally. There was just too much flack at the time and to cool the heat, the company said they are giving up. They have applied for patents on herbs in some countries, claiming them as medicines and only available by prescription. This tolls sadly for the residents of the country. Growing garlic, for example, would not be allowed. Where will all this end?

There are quite a few countries that have out and out banned the growing and sale of GMO products totally. One is New Zealand. Australia allows GMOs though so they may get pollination from cross winds. Switzerland, Ireland and Austria, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria and Luxembourg all have banned anything to do with GMO growing or sale of products containing GMOs. I think at least for a while, the human race will still have a chance. One has to ask why these countries are banning something that is "known" to be safe according to the USA?
