Anyone ever fix a broken wing in a duck? I have a very nice pastel muscovy drake I was hoping to keep as a breeder, something tried to get him last night and now he seems to have a broken wing. Right up near the shoulder joint. I hate to put him down if it is fixable, but I have spent the most part of today trying to figure out how I can possibly immobilize it enough to let it heal?

Hi Jayme,
Its a tough one.. if your just using him as a breeder, and there is no huge wound, id just let nature take its course on whether the wing heals itself or not. He may not look great, but if he is just a breeder.. If there is a big wound, bandage it up, and tape it with duct tape or he will pick it all off. I had this happen to a black swan a couple years ago, it was so badly broke and with such a large wound, the vet that came out said it would be best to amputate it, but the swan died during surgery.

Thanks Ty, the biggest issue is the swelling and the fact he is dragging the wing. I thought maybe I could immobilize it around his body, but they are such chewers not sure how long the vet wrap would stay on. I guess I could try duct tape and see. He was just this springs hatch so thinking his bones are soft still. I cannot see any open wounds on him, so not sure what got him or how he did this to himself?

Ya, id say your best bet would be to just vet wrap it as well as you can, then duct tape over the wrap. Fold the wing up the best you can to make it seem natural, and see what happens.

Sometimes swelling lasts long enough to help it heal.
