Just now, 3 days shy of her 2nd birthday, my sweet little horse, Chevy, died.

I think she broke her neck.

I went out in the lovely sun to give the two a snack, tossed the hay into the tub feeder as usual. THe big guy, Wrecker, took a half hearted bite at her, like he often does. She dodged. She tripped. She fell head first into the feeder.

At that moment Hub drove in the driveway and stopped to ask what I was doing. What I was doing was watching Chevy who staggered, bug eyed, legs splayed, making terrified sounds, she smashed off the fence twice. By this time Hub was out of his truck and into the pen , we both went to her, but it seemed she was not hearing or seeing. She went down, flailed a bit, gasped, died.

My world is changed. My routine, my morning and nights with a happy little nicker to greet me, those big eyes, that soft nose that I kissed every single day, all gone. All there is is a tiny body covered with a white sheet, waiting for the truck to come. The horse that would come to a hand signal, my little buddy, is gone.

I can't stop crying.

Very sorry to hear this Uno. I know how attached you were to her.

A horses poll, the very top of their head, is a very sensitive area and any hard knock to it can kill a horse or cause some major neurological damage. That is why you always want a good roof height with horses.
They can also become a wobbler if they survive it. I think that they brain hemorrhage when they hit their poll hard enough.
There was nothing you could do, it was a freak accident. Morn her, miss her, but please do not beat yourself up about this. It was beyond your control.

Oh my goodness Uno, this is so sad.........a freak accident indeed. It's so strange how life can be so serene one minute and then all hell breaks loose the next and you're never the same.

Thinking of you....... Sad

Oh my dear girl. You know, what can we say, you have tried to say something positive to others that you have tried to help mourn losses, you are good with words. This is a sickening thing to hear and we are all crying in our hearts, some in the actual tears, as I am now. Chevy....I remember when she came so unexpectedly into your life, this was some long time ago, and you have taken such good care of this soul -- now the soul will be somewhere else to be loved. There is nothing we can say, but know full well that you have our heartfelt sadness. One day the sun will again shine. I am still compelled to wish you happiness on these days of sorrow, find things to make you smile, like your other critters that will be feeling her loss too, CynthiaM.

Wish I had something profound and uplifting that would make you feel better.

It just sucks. It sounds like she went down quick but I'm sure it was traumatizing for you to witness. So very sorry.

I'm so sorry Uno - I lost a youngster once in a very similar freak accident. Losing a horse is always hard, but I think it's harder when it's a baby. Not only do you lose a horse that you loved, but you lose all the hopes and dreams that you had for their future as well.

Thinking of you today. Sad

Oh my Uno this is so sad to read. My heart goes out to you. I have loved horses all my life and now that we finally own some of our own I love them even more. I know how you talked about your Chevy and how much you deeply loved her.
As everyone said it was a freak accident and she passed quickly. In time your heart will heal but for now mourn her and keep her in your heart.

This is so heartbreaking. I am so sad for you. I have never had a horse but I have lost many animals and people I have loved. The more you love, the more it hurts, but loving is worth it. take care
