Hi Thought I better ask in this new post. As mentioned I have Orpington
pullets that are just starting to lay. I have 5 pullets and 3 roosters.
I can make 2 pairs and a trio. When should they be separated. Now or do
I have to wait until all are laying. I have no idea which ones are
laying right now I get an egg every 3 days or so .

Oh and my barred rock rooster Stew is in with 2 barred hens (one has a
gimpy leg and I am not sure she has ever paid) and 2 dark brahma
hens (roo died) I have 2 eggs (big whoop) that should be fertile. Can I
put them in and keep addding eggs or should I collect and add a bunch
at a time? Thanks Geri

I tend to collect and then put a bunch in at a time.

As for who is laying, I can find the you tube video if you want, but there is a way to feel who is laying. When a bird is actively laying their hips are wider. It is all done externally, but you catch your hen and if you can fit two fingers easily between the hips then she is laying, but only one finger means she is not laying.

As for when to separate. You can separate at any time. However, I tend to not breed my pullets. I try to wait til the bird is a year old or has been laying for a while. The eggs are larger and so are the chicks if you wait a bit. But that is just me personally.
