My horses have very little winter coat this year.
Old timers used to say you could tell what kind of winter we are going to have by the coat they carry.
Anyone else notice short thin coats this year?
They are fat and happy, just not much for coat.Even my two year olds have nothing.

We have one with a short coat. The rest are fuzzy as usual. My Mustang looks like a mammoth.

If the horse is over fat they grow less hair. Learned that the hard way last winter. My moms very easy keeping 5 yr old paint gelding is plump. I didnt think he was TOO fat.. but I geuss he was. Didnt grow hair like everyone else, and well geuss what, he got frost bite on his SHEATH Shocked

That is interesting DoubleSS, I would say that is true for our horses. The older gelding is the thinnest, and has the most hair. BUT my daughter's pony/paint is a very easy keeper, gets fat on dirt, the heaviest of all the horses but has a thick winter coat as well, maybe the pony in her?

LOL fat on dirt. Thats like that gelding of my moms.

If she has any shetland/icelandic in her, or even Welsh, most definatley would be why shes hairy and fat. Just a pony thing I geuss, most of the breeds come from pretty cold places.

That does sound like a good assumption, but I would disagree based on our horses. It is the opposite here. The fattest is also the one with the thickest coat.

So my horse is an easy keeper. During the day time wears a grazing muzzle and night time dirt pen with a flake of hay. He want back to the stables 2 weeks ago and is so hairy. Not fat fat , but not super skinny either. I had a rain sheet on him to slow down his coat growing. Yesterday I rode him and boy do they get sweaty fast. so tomorrow he is getting a little naked, well his neck and chest and just past his girth ( cinch) area are getting shaved or should I say clipped. So tomorrow winter coat time, which means tonight I need to be fixing his blanket. Just been too busy fixing everyone else horse blankets Very Happy which helps keep my horse at the stables so it is not all bad.
My first horse was an old mare and every year no matter how the Winter was she grew a long 2-3 inch long coat of hair. Birds loved her come Spring time.

I will have to try and take photos of mine.
Maybe they are coated up well and I am thinking they have not much for coat.
Getting old and minds not as good as it used to be Smile
pretty sure it was super fuzzy last year.

Mine are all fuzzy and have been for awhile now. My Morgan seems to start getting her winter coat in Sept. she is 17 so maybe it is age related. My 2 yr old also has her winter coat now but it only came in about a month ago.

My horses are all woolly mamoths this year. I also noticed (My family are hunters) that the wild life has very heavy coats around here also!! I guess that means we are going to FREEZE this winter!! LOL
