I was wondering if anyone has fed spent grain to their chickens?

I have a source of 3 5gal buckets of spent grain a couple times a week, but am wondering if there is any nutritional value in it, and if it is too fiberous to be of any good?

I know it is somewhat random, just hoping someone may have advice to give. It is spent grain (barley?) from beer brewing.

Thanks Smile

You mean spent, in that it has been used? Rather than past the expiry date? I would imagine that most of the nutritional value would be gone, especially if it has been soaked. Maybe that it is the fiberous (is that a word?) part of the barley left? In that case, it may not do harm, or a lot of good, depending on what product it was soaked in?

It's boiled in water at the start of beer brewing... I think it's a kind of Malt Barley. I'm wondering if it would be too fibrous, I think it's mostly hulls left? I'm not sure..

Is there a micro-brewery anywhere near you? The Brewmaster would know the answer to this I'd bet. At least they'd know if the grain had anything left in it, not so much about whether you could feed it to chooks...

It would be just fine but not as a diet but you new that. The mash process leaves most of the feed value intact. And gives the grain a sweet flavor that they go nuts over.
