So my shipped eggs are supposed to go into lock down tonight. I have a few with air cells traveling down the side of the egg would these be the ones to try and hatch upright? I can see vessels in the egg so I am hoping its viable!

Thanks

Anne

Anne, it may just be easier to hatch them all that way in an egg carton or something, it won't harm them, and they hatch very well like that. My first vertical hatches were with shipped eggs and I just did it with all after that as it seem like there are less "hatching accidents and easier cleanup! Have they been vertical in a turner until now? If so they should have as good a chance as any. Doesn't hurt to try. When the hatch is over check and see how many of the loose air-cell ones hatched and how many are left in the egg. It is interesting and useful to keep track!

If you don't want to hatch all vertically put all the rolling air-cell ones and any others you think need it-smaller aircells etc!

Good luck with the hatch. I have some broody warmed ones due on this coming weekend or Monday

Okay sounds good. Yes they have been vertical until now. I also tried the not turning the turner on until about day 3. Plus they sat for about 36 hours after the arrived before going in the bator. There are a few ( maybe less then 6) with the slipped air cells. I am pretty sure a couple of them also had bubbles in them in the beginning but I dont see that now. I started cutting out little cups from cartons to put those ones in.

Wish us luck!

Thank you!

They are marans and welsomers and I had one of my d'uccles start laying again just as they arrived so two of those went in as well. ONly one has made it to now - I am praying for a hen!

OKay its been two weeks since the hatch and I have ment to post about this again.

I put 9 in egg cartons that had travelling air cells and the other 11 just on their sides. Of the nine 6 hatched and only two more from the "on the floor" group managed to hatch. One of the 1st ones out from the upright hatch was from one of the worst slipped air cells in the bunch. I will definatly use this method again and next time put everyone upright! Definatly better hatch and less mishaps for sure.

Congratulations on the hatch Anne! See it does work! Still, 8 chicks from 20 badly shaken eggs isn't bad at all. That's 40% which considered about average-good for shipped eggs. I am so glad you kept track and could see the difference between the uprights and the laying-downs. You really can learn a lot from little experiments like this. Smile And you get to enjoy chicklets too!
