So my neighbour wants to get a pair of geese. She wants something that's not going to be aggressive or at least to aggressive. They would be pets. Her husband had a bad experience with geese when he was younger so he has made a point that they have to be calm and manageable.

She was looking at Buffs are they available?
Does anybody have any on here?
What's their availability in Canada or even within the western provinces? She has family from here to Sask so there shouldn't be a problem with transport.
Is there maybe a breed that she would like better?

Open to opinions and options  Very Happy

Thanks All.

I have a buff goose. He's pretty okay in terms of temperament. I raised him from a gosling, but he has never challenged me. He's actually for sale.

I find my tufteds are the nicest of my geese. They are a bit on the shyer side and are less aggressive to the other geese. They are also smaller than my other geese. I have an extra male for sale.

Between the two, the tufted is less dominant, but a male buff bred to a grey female will produce all buff daughters and all grey sons, it's a neat sex linked colour that allows for auto sexing at hatch.

I have one Embden cross gander who has bitten people and will challenge you. For a goose like this, a rake, or some sort of garden tool helps keep the goose off of you. I gave this goose to my best friend, and he has an off again on again love affair with her.

All geese during the breeding season are ornery.

The key is not to allow the male goose to dominate you. I have never had issues with geese where I have been seriously hurt but then I have emu, geese are small birds compared to them. Folks who are less confident may not enjoy them. I have had to grab a goose and show him who's boss. Especially during the breeding season and when the males are all battling for dominance. Outside of breeding season, they are all pretty chill.

Stay away from meat bred Embdens. I find them to be the most aggressive. They have not been bred with temperament in mind, most Embdens are meat geese and have been bred for meatiness. That said, there are breeders who breed nice Embdens for show.

Worse comes to worse, geese can be good eating. I have never eaten any of my birds, but I have eaten goose. I like it.

I agree with Katt.

Does she need a pair? If they are not breeding they are generally ok. ALso looking for babies that they can hand raise will make them more friendly.

I of course am partial to the sebastapols. Even during breeding the male talks a lot but he's never done anything. But am the feed cart. Stranger well maybe he might take a run at them.

My Sebbies are the most demanding of food! Yes! Hahahaha, but between the Sebs and the tufteds. I find the tufteds a lot less more in my face. I raised the Sebbies in my living room so they are less shy around people and more likely to come beg!
