I am enjoying the quilt-like patterns that adorn the Sochi Olympic banners, signs, wall, etc.

they are quite beautiful. I don't have a tv. can't watch the Olympics. Will survive though. Will miss the skating.

This is the first winter Olympics I have seen in a long time on TV. We only got satellite a couple years ago. I am watching the team skating right now....rerun. I know who will win.

Magdalen, take the hubby out for a drink at the local pub to watch the skating. That is how I used to get my sports fix.

Sue, I am not much of a tv watcher, nor a big sports fan so to be honest, no, I have not watched any Olympics so far. I do however listen to the CBC radio reports. Of course the radio reports don't display colourful banners.

As soon as I saw your posted pic I immediately began analyzing the piecing pattern for this design. Hmm...how do they do that? THanks for the post.

It looks tricky. There don't seem to be any set repeating blocks. There are lots of inward pointing angles which do look impossible to sew.

I used to have a pattern very similiar-- not the same but similiar for sure.   its like strip piecing but with (okay, seriously my brain is not coming up with words.  damn)
um? rhombus shapes?  is that the right word?  strips cut on angles, then the piece them, sew the strips.  I did a scrappy quilt like that but with straight up and down sides, not angles.

that's how I would go about it anyhow.  just sew pieces together on the angles, trim and sew the strips together on the angle?
(oh the english language is my friend this morning.  frick. does that not sound like a jumbled up pile of words if I have ever seen it)

Or I could be talking out my arse. in which case, just ignore and pass on by-- nothing to see here folks, nothing to see here!

BIAS> cutting pieces on the bias. is that the better way of saying it?? as soon as I hit post, the words came into my brainz better

Studying this design, it would be VERY DIFFICULT to sew as shown. IT would require some tricky piecing. Tricky piecing is not my best skill.

It would be possible to do this, mostly like Lanaire said. Cut straight strips. Sew them together, then slice through this, at an angle, and you'd get a row of diamond shapes. And bias edges. Heaven preserve us from bias edges! In my quilting I try to have as few bias cuts as possible since they are wobbly and fiddly and can't be trusted!

I think they had a pre made diamond design of various sized diamonds that fit into a tessellating block, made the quilt, then APPLIQUED single diamonds on top of the pattern in various areas just to MESS YOU UP!
