too exciting, I'm totally jazzed by the emergence of a new pullet laying eggs, to the point of show and tell Embarassed .  well, here it is.  I have no idea who laid it but this is a cutie pie egg  -  no one wanted to eat it this morning (not talking about the chooks, talking about the egg-frying people) -  everyone goes for the big ones but I am celebrating it's presence in the coop cause it means we have another layer and makes me go giddy and I take it as a sign they are happy enough to get into the action so I must be doing something right out there.  And, I'm proud cause I'm not hijacking Authenticfarm's post about her coronation sussex pullets first egg Cool (which makes my pullet's first egg look like it was laid by a smurf sized chicken!).  someone new is laying! so now I'm a copycat Authentic but let it be a sign of flattery Smile .

too too too right! I am going to make nests with eggs from . . . maybe fimo or baked playdough. . . for the Christmas tree in the honor of the blessed chickens out there. I would love to weigh the eggs just for kicks but I don't know where to get scales. are they expensive?

I got mine at Canadian Tire. I think they're pretty cheap - $20-40, somewhere in there. Mine goes up to 11 kg, so I can weigh chickens on it, too.

I originally bought it to weigh parcels. Now it's seeing a lot more use. lol

I got one at Extra Foods. On sale for $11.97 I think. Easy to clean as it's a glass top. Same weight range as Authenticfarm. Good deal!

look what was in the nest box this morning (and now in my husbands tum)!  It is a monster, set behind the cutie pie one in the front.  Turned out to be a double yolker.  super nice poached with pinch of salt and pepper on hot buttered toast. mmmmm.  I am amazed that there are not more posts on here about eggs, egg colors, egg size, eggs this and eggs that  . . . maybe I am just turning in to the eggstrovert I never was as a kid and it took eggs in the nest to get me going Razz

I suppose the novelty will wear off sooner or later.  Might get a bit much if all several thousand members posted pictures of their eggs.  Put that way, I don't think I'll put any more up unless something really really extraordinary.  Must say, these eggs are so much nicer than any I have bought from anywhere else, nicer than the ones from the Isa Browns I had but perhaps I didn't treat them as lovingly as I treat these kids.  I'm under their spell now.

Off to have the snow plowing refresher.  Heavy wet snow all over everything out there today.  ugh.

oh my gosh gosh gosh Karaanblue!  those are some purdy as eggs!  and look at that whopkcakcer in the front right spot!!!!  cyclops  so glad the novelty hasn't worn off.  Please, post again and as often as you like on here.  celebrate these goodies!!!  aren't they just the loveliest things ever created.  I really liked seeing the ones on the display table in KathyS' show photos too, some so dark they look like chocolate mud.  which of your chickens lays the reddish brown ones?

Im suspecting the whopper (weighed in at 75g) is a double yolker like yours was today!  I havent ate it yet - like I said the novelty hasn't worn off yet Smile
They are all from my Olive Egger pullets.  From what I understand - 50% chance they will lay olive colored eggs - one of my black OE hens (she looks the most like a BCM) is laying the reddish brown egg.  The other 3 pullets I do believe are laying various shades of the olive.  Had one yesterday almost a mint green - really need a 'nest cam' so I know who is laying what!

It really is neat seeing the varying degrees of 'dark' put on top of the blue shell base - I really love the spotted ones!

oh they are just to die for Karaandblue.  I keep scrolling down to look at them :-).  I got to know if it is a double yolker so report back will ya Smile   -  when the deed is done that is.  seems such a shame to break them.  got to say, those speckled jobbies are pretty dang lovely.  And the reddish brown one(s) are pretty sweet too.  I have one chicken, possibly two that might lay a colorful egg.  One is b.australorp x amerucauna (has black legs) and the other is rir x amerucauna (yellow legs).  Looking forward to seeing what comes along.  Ms yellow legs might not do anything interesting as I think I read somewhere that if the legs aren't colored dark then you won't get a colored egg.  I could be just full of fluff here but something lodged in my mind about that.  They are yet to start laying anyway.

Yeah, think I want a nest cam too  -  there must be some thing on amazon for free shipping that could do the job Twisted Evil .  might look in to it later.  has to be able to handle the dust out there, goodness they are scratching about so much  -  a fine layer of dust over EVERYTHING.

Do you find you get as many eggs from your olive egg laying chickens as you would from the regular colored egg layers? would love to hear your experience on that, if you have any to compare.

Leg colour doesn't matter.  Have a look at their combs.  The blue egg gene is closely linked to the pea comb.  It doesn't guarantee anything, as you know cream legbars have a single comb and lay a blue egg, but the chances are higher if they have pea combs.

I have had many yellow legged, green egg layers.

oh I am very excited now because they both have those tiny little combs. now I just cannot wait to see what they do! I think the RIR x might not lay till spring because she is without a doubt the bottom of the pecking order and spends a lot of her time expecting to get "the peck" and keeping herself out of harms way. Power to her though, she is stepping up to her new environment and I thought she might not so who knows - she may be tougher than I thought she was. Oh, I saw one of the Xena's taking some oyster shell so it must be she who did the new egg :-). Bless her pretty feathers and knowing eye.

Now I am going to have to go out and grab my new olive egger pullet and see what kind of comb she has!

She has the pea comb. Remember you aren't a fan of the single comb types so I made sure you got the pea comb girl Wink

Magdelan - I don't know how these girls are going to make out over the summer as they just started last week and it's the first time I've had them. They seem to be laying every other day or two days lay one day off kind of cycle. Likely not as many as the ISA's I've had in the past but that's ok too Smile they are laying as many as my dark Cornish are I think... But there's 9 of them to 4 OE's so maybe I'm wrong. Lol. I will keep in touch and sorry for hijacking your post about your lovely pullet eggs Smile eggs in all forms and colors are beautiful. Simplistic and beautiful Smile

Oh my goodness, I like people hijacking my posts. I think it is good karma and enjoy every moment of it Smile . Yes, lets stay tuned about how they go. I really understand Pollywog, have been studying my pullets so much and waiting so long that I think I caused a delay in production! They seemed to clench up in front of me (they work away from pressure it seems, mirroring myself somewhat, no one out there appreciates me squinting at them No ) so this is why I am so excited about the newbie. So proud of her.

ok, last pictures, am trying not to over do this but I just about dropped my jaw yesterday when I went in to the coop at the same time as Fattybum (barred rock) laid a whopper egg  -  I was transported back in time 17 years to my 21hr labor experience  -  I felt for her  -  I'm not sure what a chicken experiences but the idea of delivering a baby every day (or even every other day) makes my mind empty out completely.  She worked hard on this one.  Hat off to her, all hail the mighty layer.  trumpets now sounding in my head.

This morning I have another pullet laying, think it might be a dark cornish and the egg is very small, half the size or less than Fattybum's gargantuan.  Very sweet, not from a partridge chantecler this time, not the right shape, more pointy at one end and much smaller.

My regular egg clients arent complaining....
