Pewter, beautiful name for a beautiful bird. There is just something about the little ones, now isn't there? And you have a nice warm place for purring mamma to raise them, awesome!! I ahve before melded littler chicks with slightly older chicks once, same scenario basically, but incubator raised and they were all like little pigs in a blanket, no problems. I think little chicks are like little kids, they love their own childlike personalities. Oh by the way, heartwarming pictures to see this time of year when it is only going to get colder. Have an awesome day, CynthiaM.

They sure are cute little beasties.  Gotta love Momma hens.  Pewter is so pretty.  Lovely warm place in the winter too.

I miss our barn in Armstrong.  Sad    Was so nice and big.   Maybe, ( I hope) we can get back to the Interiour, and get a small place.

We really don't like Alberta,  Also really don't like snow in a small yard, no place to dump the snow?

really cool to see how the pretty patterns in her feathers have changed as she grew older - Pewter that is. I just cannot wait until there is a broody chook at my house with little fluff butts underneath it peeping out and snuggling under with that mamma cluck cluck clucking away. think that is the epitome of safe and secure - just looooove it.

Tara please keep posting photos of this love affair as it grows - I can't wait to have this phenomenon happen out in my own yard but in the interim would really just love to experience vicariously what's going on at your place. Really like your bantam Pewter and look forward to seeing others in the program. I feel this is a likely to be approved request as you say you love posting photographs Razz

Those chicks are so sweet. I love to see a momma hen raise the chicks, rather than an incubator. They "learn" to be proper chickens.

Oh how lovely are the feathers that the oldest chick is growing in, beautiful and wowsers! Geeze, I can't stand it. You are posting pictures of one of my favourite things, and that is the mamma and her babies. Oh, spring can't come soon enough. I have a buff orpington that is still mothering her four little babies. Go figure that one. She doesn't take them to bed anymore, but they traipse around the farm, the little babies in tow. But big, born about September 1, they are nigh to 11 weeks old, look like little bowling balls following her around, the boy and the girl. A frickin' chicken hawk got one about 2 weeks ago. Damned thing. First time a raptor has taken a bird around here. Dumb. I was in the chicken house, heard the screaching of the mamma buff, looked outside and saw the huge bird in flight. they had been ramblin' about 10 feet into the alfalfa field, one must have been a little too far away, and prime target. Oh well. Done was done. Mamma kept those babies close to the chicken house for a very long time. Now they are back out doin' their thing. But at 11 weeks old, they still follow mamma, and she had not gone back with the clan either, she sticks by the babies and off they always go to the wild blue yonder. I think that the orpingtons here are even better mothers than the cochins, odd, but is so. The funniest thing I think when babies are on mamma backs is when she doesn't want them on and she bends over sideways and they all slip off, talk about a hoot and a hollar to see that. Oh boy, spring is just around that corner, and soon there will be lots of broodies. Can't wait! Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Oh geeze, so funny, you shoulda been a story narrator, I can hear ya....in two of the pictures, look at the older chick. Now if that is not coveting, I don't know what is. Look how tall it is standing, trying to see why on earth that chick is on the back and not it....love it when chicks or even the adult, put their head up to high to look. Generally, they look about twice the size that they normally are. Yes, what are they looking at when they peer to the belly as the little chick was so doing? They see stuff that we do not, think "the bird's eye view" "eyes like a hawk", bet it was an interesting piece of oat straw! Have a most wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Gracias Tara. Ka pai Smile . (= good in Maori - hope no one tries a conversation with me in that language, I know less than 20 words!). So cool to get that commentary on your project. Your birds really are lovely and I think your plan to put real Chant blood in to the bantams is a brilliant idea - makes sense to me. The name you have come up with is most apt, those combs are the business methinks - I can see myself heading in their direction because of that to a large degree (the Chantecler - light or dark but probably dark because I am in love with their feathers and chunky bodies with short legs and when they look you in the eye you know you've been looked at pirat ).

Hmm, interesting post and I think that sucks. What I think sucks is that you indicated that no Chantecler blood was used to make the bantam Chantecler. Well then. Wanna tell me how they can call that breed a breed? Sorry, just don't get some things some times. I think it's wrong. Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Oh, beautiful pictures. I love the tender mamma looking at her baby. The love of a mamma hen is really quite remarkable, I would call it love, it is probably just instinct to rear, but we can give it a human emotion and makes us feel all fuzzy and warm. Where are you keeping your mamma hens, Tara? I can't imagine right now any broody hens, cause I have a very cold barn. But then, that is kind of a stupid thing to say. I have had broodies in January here, in that very cold barn, and the chicks all turn out just fine, mamma warms them. So, I would suppose, thinking about it, that your mammas are probably just in a chicken coop. But I would like to know, regardless, do you keep them in a little building designed for chick raising, this time of year. I love that you have babies coming along. The first group, boy that oldest one sure has took off eh? Funny how about 2 weeks old they really begin to make such noticeable changes with the feathering. Oh. I can't wait for mammas and their babies this year. Think I'm gonna have lots of broodies, and I say, bring it! Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.
