This October is Election Time for many of the counties & municipalities here in Alberta. Parkland County is no different. While residents are busy listening to candidates and trying to have concerns heard, something may just be passing under area residents radar: The current Animal Control Bylaws.
Parkland County is holding a series of public input sessions to get resident's thoughts and opinions on what the county can do to improve the existing Animal Control Bylaw.
Many of us who live in Parkland County, live on residential acreages. Because we do, we have bylaws which states how many animals, both pets & livestock, which we can keep on our properties based on the size of our acreage. Recently, many new developments are being built in Parkland that have size restricts of 2.5 acres to accommodate more homes within these developments. This also means your neighbors are much closer to you than say if you live on the older developments where some of the homes can be as much as 10 acres apart.
Smaller lots can keep heritage animals & poultry too. However, with smaller lots and neighbors being closer, complaints are more likely to happen. Remember that bylaws that are changed to accommodate new residents to our county looking to live the country life with city comforts WILL effect those of us who live in the older residential developments.
This is important as the ads the county is currently running in local papers to let residents know about the up & coming input sessions, highlight the managing of chickens in regards to the current Animal Control Bylaw.
Those of us living on residential properties in Parkland who keep poultry, rabbits and livestock under the current bylaws may become affected if the current animal units per acre are changed, lowered or restricted to accommodate newer developments.
Parkland County residents are welcomed to join any of the 3 input sessions being held to discuss the current bylaws. Simply RSVP to 780-968-8400 and say which session you wish to attend.
