I've been holding birds while standing on a lame bathroom scale, and the results have been unsurprisingly less than precise. Rolling Eyes I'm tired of guesstimating/half assing it, and would like to invest in a good, proper scale, but am not sure what kind would be best. Postal? Fish scale? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Go on Ebay, there are Digital Produce Scales for sale. The scales are used for weighing fruits and vegetables etc, they show either pounds or kilos etc. Tuck the chickens head under it's wing and set it on the scale, you get a precise accurate weight

I use hubbies digital calf scale. Put them in a fabric bag and hang them on it. Works good for me.

I just went and bought a Starfrit kitchen scale for 1/2 off at Canadian tire. I think it was about 10.00 bucks all together

Woo, lots of great ideas here, thanks again for your replies. Smile  Hi ho hi ho, a scale shopping I shall go!

Tara, most of my chickens learn tolerance for my touchy, feely ways too. lol Of course, having yogurt dipped mealies and BOSS on hand really helps tip the scales in my favor. Razz

Lee Valley has a cheap but accurate hanging scale. $9.95. Wrap the bird in a towel, tie it and hang it to weigh, then weigh the towel alone and subtract.

It even has a cute bonus happy face.

We got a stainless steel digital food scale in superstore, it was just under $20 and works great.  Only does up to 11lbs though so not for huge birds.  My son uses it to weigh and sort his eggs, I used it to weigh all our finished chickens before they went into the freezer and I also use it for measuring my soap making ingredients

I'd love to see how much Thankgiving weighs but will have to try the bird in a bag and hung from a fish scale Smile
