I notice my girls are slightly shorter necked and thicker necks nearer the body than the males. The males are bigger too, but this is at two years - before they started laying it was REALLY hard to tell!

Toulouse are my second favourite goose. Hard to tell from the pics, but I think I see one female. I go by head size.

I'd love to get another female for my flock.

OK BCKev, I'll bite - what is your favourite goose?

Super Africans. I had dewlap Toulouse at one time as will and really liked them. I find the bigger geese to be friendlier. I just wish they were meatier, for when you have to cull extras. They are all very entertaining. I am really enjoying getting back into the geese this year.

They are entertaining and very low maintenance and very decorative. All of which I love.

Hey, they look very happy and YOU are most welcome!!!
I just think they are elegant. Haven't figured how to tell boys from girls... except size, once they are mature. I thought someone said they males sound different than the females???

ANyway, I'm really glad you have them

I'm glad I have them, too, Cathy. I agree that they are very elegant. My best guess is 2 males and a female.  2 seem to be louder and more honky than the third one. There's no problem with the grass being too long in that pen anymore.  They are definitely lower maintenance than chickens. I'm going to move them to a bigger pen soon, if I can figure out how to herd geese! LOL.

Is it possible the geese are eating chicken eggs? I used to get a small egg every day or two from my bantam Cornish, and there haven't been any for a week or 2....

Geese are really easy to herd. I let mine free range all day - often find them in the bull pen, hanging out with the bulls, then they come up to the dog run in the evening to be put safely away. No housing for the summer - just chain link dog run with chain link roof. They really like to see what's going on and are much calmer now they can come and go and aren't cornered. They hate being cornered.

YIKES.. .I wouldn't think they are eggs robbers, but who knows??

I don't have to herd the ones I have, they come when called and follow me around for the most part Smile

These guys come running when I show up, looking for grain, but I don't know if they would follow me out of their pen into another pen. Kind of scared to try. Wouldn't want to lose them.

Mine are at the age of conversation, one way of course, don't want to hear what I say. They walk up to with necks stretched out and their squeaky little teen voices telling me about all the things I am doing wrong in their upbringing, and what I should be giving them more of. But if I sit and listen long enough they will settle in beside me and not say much but just give me the odd little look of come upance. I don't have the heart to tell them how good they taste. Some day though if they say the wrong thing.......
