The scientists have successfully introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk.

Human milk contains high quantities of key nutrients that can help to boost the immune system of babies and reduce the risk of infections.

The scientists behind the research believe milk from herds of genetically modified cows could provide an alternative to human breast milk and formula milk for babies, which is often criticised as being an inferior substitute.

They hope genetically modified dairy products from herds of similar cows could be sold in supermarkets. The research has the backing of a major biotechnology company.

The work is likely to inflame opposition to GM foods. Critics of the technology and animal welfare groups reacted angrily to the research, questioning the safety of milk from genetically modified animals and its effect on the cattle's health.

When we raise a generation of children who chew their cud, it will serve us right! I think this is wrong. I think (some) scientists have become obscene monsters, unrestrained by common sense.

Well, I suppose I am going to catch flack for this, but I can see the benefits.

This milk may be a good alternative to the commercial formulas out there. It was a good thing my mom could breast feed. Any formula that was out there at the time, I was allergic to. There are large numbers of children out there to whom formula is not a healthy alternative to breastmilk. This could be an option.

Just because it is GMO does not make it wrong. Just because we don't understand it doesn't make it bad.

I'm of two minds. On the one hand, as Schipperkesue says, this could be a good alternative for children because a lot of parents just don't feed babies properly.

On the other hand, this playing around with genes can have profound effects. No telling what unforeseen effects could come in the milk. It would need extensive testing except past experience tells us it won't get it. GMO's get pushed onto the market for the sake of profits.

On the other other hand, dealing with human genes raises even more questions. Is there a percentage of human genes that is required before the animal starts to have legal rights? When would it stop being farming and become slavery? Can we put a few cow genes into some humans and have legalized slavery?

I see your point, and there are options now. Breast milk banks, goats milk, specialty formulas for allergies. I think options are good, just not messing with genes and introducing it as a food.
