I do not enjoy lots of record keeping but now that I have finished hatching and selling eggs for the year, I would love to find out which Dominique hen lays which egg and how often she lays in a given time period. With 3 different lines I do not have a consistent egg type/size yet and now that I have my birds looking more like I would like them to, I want to work on their egg production and quality.
So, I have set up 2 wire show cages in the henhouse and put a hen in each tonight.
I plan to record how many eggs each hen lays and the quality of each. I may even break each one open to check for blood spots/ meat spots and yolk color/quality.
I would love your opinion on how long I should keep each hen in the cage for a fair test. I feel like the first day, they may hold onto their egg because of being in the cage but then the next day they should "have to" lay an egg. I know they may temporarily stop laying from the change in location and/or stress of being caged so I figure no point keeping them in there more than 3 days?
Otherwise I would have to wait a week or so until they settled down again to be a fair test.
Maybe create a point system for their egg quality and their egg quantity and tag them each accordingly?
Any other ideas to make this test fair and reflective of their egg performance?
Anyone else done this at one time or planning to do this with their breeds?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
