Not having the best of day so far,

Every night I have made it a ritual to lock up all my birds into their enclosures, being extremely tired I didn't have time for the antics of the ducks who were playing ring around the duck hut last night, in the rain. So I figured meh, I will try again later and lock them up before I go to bed.... Well I fell asleep on the couch, and crawled into bed later on, forgetting about the still wondering around ducks.....Well I am just sick to my stomach today...

Lost three duck hens overnight. Two of which were sitting on eggs due to hatch in a few days. Not sure if it was an owl attack or a fox or both! I went to go do my morning chores and found one hen in very rough shape, she passed away in isolation. Found another hen, head gone, and inside cavity eating from the neck hole, typical of an owl. But here is the hardest thing to understand and figure out...... 25+ Duck eggs, and an entire duck hen all missing. No signs of any broken eggs, no shells and no evidence of foot prints or a struggle inside the duck hut, outside it or anywhere in the compound. It is like as if something picked up all the eggs and carried them off. I have searched high and low, no signs of forced entry, no signs of the missing duck and no signs of a predator tracts on the outside perimeter. What ever did this, had the entire night to carry out it's attack. The same thing also attacked my group of Orpingtons!! Tore out most of Hobbit's tail feathers, through the wire, and attacked my Light Sussex rooster and his hens. My LS roo is missing almost all his tail feathers. What ever this was that attacked last night, got through my perimeter fence, attacked birds inside one compound, and into our inner compound and completely destroyed my entire flock of ducks and eggs.

I have been outside numerous times today trying to piece it all back together, but things are not adding up.

Jonny, I am so sorry.... how awful! I can tell how much you care for your birds and what each individual means to your breeding program. Such a loss.

The missing head does sound like an owl to me.

The missing eggs sounds like a fox. A coon would bust them open on the spot. Fox will carry them away and bury them (bet they're even buried somewhere close by). Had a fox kill 2 silkies once, years ago. Found one of them under some leaves at the edge of the pen.

They're certainly thick this year. Leaving for work one morning, looked out and there was a fox standing admiring my birds. Thing didn't even run off until I ran at it yelling. Felt sick all day because I had no time to put the birds back in at that point but they were untouched when I got back home so it must not have come back.

So sorry Jonny. It just leaves you with a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. Don't beat yourself up about. Try to do something nice for yourself today if you can. Lou

I understand this feeling all to well. I am sorry for your losses, it is a heart sinking feeling of helplessness and anger. Now you have to be twice as vigilant. Word gets around.

Coons will not always bust them on the spot if that is the case I guess the sow coon that had a litter in grain bin didnt read that memo as she was taking them back to the bin as I caught her doing it and found her stash before she went bye bye

and I agree Jonny it is not your fault it happens and from the sounds of your set up they had to work hard to get them

My condolences Jonny . Sad

I had the same thing happen about a month ago. Only it was my beautiful Cayuga drake, my little Buddy that I lost. Followed the trail of feathers out across the property line and out across the road. I still have some steel waiting here for them, neighbors too.

Turns out we have 2 dens in the area. 1 north , 1 south. Now I have to lock everybody up every night.

Coons will take their food to a water source. They like to wash and eat. So it could very well be it packed them all off to its favorite watering hole. If you know of a place, go check it out.

One thing I've learned over the years, is ducks just seem to be predator magnets. I'm not sure what it is, but whenever I've had ducks, my predator problems increased dramatically.

I don't think there are raccoons where Jonny lives. I could be mistaken though. They seem to be spreading across Alberta. We don't have any here, but I am on the opposite side to the city from Jonny.

Sorry Jonny, that's rotten. No

eta: have you considered a live trap to catch the culprit? Because I guarantee it'll be back...I'm very happy with my little giant trap we got from Peavey Mart. Looks exactly like this, (the 36 inch one) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] so far I've caught 6 coons, 3 skunks, and 1 magpie with it. Oh, and our cats numerous times. Maybe they're in cahoots with the rats.

Sorry for your loss Jonny.
Wow what a total shocker to loose so much in one night and thankfully only tail feathers on some. Seems they were in no rush on what they were doing at your place.
Sending a big hug

We have them in our area now, so they likely are in Jonny's area, too.

Now I have a vision of a rat riding a racoon like a jockey, crossing the Saskatchewan border!

Authentic, have they been moving in from the east?

Sorry for your losses. It sounds like a raccoon, I caught a raccoon in my coop a few years back and it was eating the guts and crop out of a live chicken. I had lost several chickens up to that point. I shot a few and leave a radio on 24/7, Classic Rock and Roll, haven't lost any poultry since

From the west, as far as I know.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all your support, kind comments and imput.

I don't think it was raccoons, Tsamis and I are pretty darn convinced that is was a fox all signs point to fox attack.
We are discussing what the next step of action is to re-enforce the perimeter.

We know that we have them in the area, and I am sure it's mom feeding her young.

Everyone is on lockdown right now, except Luke, by Black Orp Rooster who is standing in the middle of his run, he is standing there getting soaked, chest all puffed up standing tall and proud, he has always been our alert bird, guard bird. Takes his job very seriously.

I too have a fox. I had a barred rock hen with a gimpy foot and I let her loose in the yard when the chickens were in their pens. She can't go far.She disappeared. Today i was riding the lawn tractor and this big tall fox was in the middle of the yard and didn't run until I started waving my arms and yelling. I am going to have to get a live trap and get rid of her. There is a person about 1/2 a mile away with free range chickens i think I need to warn them if they don't already know. So no one goes out until the fox is caught.

Our issue is and I know this,

Is that the neighbours that moved in next door late last year, the lady, a huge animal lover spent the entire winter feeding her 12 cats, and a family of skunks. I have seen the cats and skunks eating wet cat food out of the same bowl at the same time.
She was also putting out chunks of meat for the coyotes.

Everything was great, we had very little traffic on the property from four legged predators cause of this over winter.

Well about two weeks ago I heard barking coming from the neighbours place. They now have a dog, not sure the breed, but I have not had a chance to talk to the neighbours since, almost like they are avoiding me now?? I am pretty sure they got the dog, because the coyotes who were no longer getting a free meal started to eat their cats!

So they brought in a dog to ward off the coyotes that they attracted.

Anywho since they decided to get a dog, I take it they have stopped feeding the local population of predators now, which means the fox and coyotes are now switching back to hunting for their meals than getting a free hand out.

Nothing better than having your neighbours invite in a bunch of predators by feeding them, and then one day stopping.
Sure they might not have any issues over on their property anymore, but now I am left to deal with these confused animals.

I placed the duck Carcass that was remaining from the kill on the outside our our compound, last night and today it's gone, You can see in the tall grass where something, came in and carried it off.

Am I mad at my neighbours.... Heck no, they are very sweet loving people, treat us very well.

I just now have to do my best to step up my defences.

Oh and for the record I saw what I think was Momma Fox today, it was a fox, could have been male creeping past the back fence, it saw me and darted into the willows.

I am not planning on Trapping, killing or otherwise harming the foxes, going to work against them and try to co-exist together.

So sorry, Johnny. That is heart-breaking! We used to lose goats and sheep to coyotes, here. We only have a small flock to start with. Now we have 2 LGD's and don't have anymore coyote problems. The dogs have drawn a line and the coyotes don't dare cross it.
