I would make a removable wall that would act as a barrier ( a couple of poles where you could say tie a sheet onto ? ) to keep any frost off of the plants till they reach a good height ? A sheet of plywood / a old blanket ? that would protect the plants from prevailing winds etc ? that or make a smog in the evenings ,it will keep the frost away ! Around here they do that with fruit trees if there is a frost warning ,a five gallon pail with some old musty straw will smolder all night pretty well , that or turn on your sprinkler over night ? that will keep the frost at bay as well

Oh I know what I was going to say. It was at Coopslave, this was her thread and I went off on a tangent asking Hillbilly to do some paperwork Embarassed

Maybe you have difficulty growing corn, but boy, I know first hand you can grow some honkering big potatoes, smiling. I can grow potatoes here too, but they don't grow as easily as what you seem to achieve.

I totally agree with the floating row cover thing. I think I am going to order some of those from West Coast seeds this year. But I am not going to use them for heating soil. I am going to use them to cover the brassicas!! I cannot stand that cabbage moth that lays the eggs on the underside of the leaves of some vegetables, you can't see them unless the leaf is flipped over. But boy, when those green worms come and eat all the foliage, they are very visible, particularly on a different shade of green than them leaf. I can't stand them...and they make broccoli a pain in the butt. I am growing an ornamental type of broccoli this year, a hybrid I guess, it is called a romanesco broccoli and I don't want the cabbage worms on these broccoli plants either. Geeze, think I rambled off topic again. Don't get me goin' on some things, I just can't stay on topic, smiling. Beautiful days, CynthiaM.

The cool edible pretty broccoli I am growing this year

I am at a 1000 meters. Won't have much of a garden this year my self. will do some basic root crops and that is probably all. This long winter has put me so far behind. One of the changes for us has been the extended warmth at the end of season, we are getting hot weather right into October. Which of course screws up my hunting and butchering seasons.

We're at 650 feet here. I will do those records Cynthia. I'll also check last years records. I keep all this info in a diary already. sow date of every vegetable. when picked etc. Flowers too, when they start emerging in the spring. I can tell you we're about a week and a half ahead of last year already, but we got lucky with only one day of frost last may. it could be different this year, we'll see.

I was going to suggest planting the corn indoors in peat pots. It will give it extra growing time. I am going to do that hear. No snow but garden is too wet and its freakin cold out.

I tried that here one year, and also planted directly to the garden. They finished at the same time, even though the peat pots were 6 inches high when I put them in the dirt.
