My Turkey order coming next week is not coming next week. Trouble with the incubator over heating and all he could supply is my Choclates. so its a reorder for the end of June. I ordered Sept 21st so much for planning ahead to get them early. The weather held up his hens from laying earlier now incubator trouble. The best layed plans!!!

He said he was resetting monday or tuesday and I think it was only one incubator that over heated so your order may be alright. I kind of asked if he could substitute for my order but it sounds like it was going to cause a chain reaction with his orders. One problem is some of the poults I ordered are now listed as sold out for 2011 so I dont know where that leaves me whether I get what I want or?

We have never brought turkeys up, should we water them as soon as we pick them up from the post office or wait til we get home- about an 8 hour drive we are figuring, we are picking them up in Portal North Dakota.

I'm not an expert on this but I plan on giving them Sugar water as soon as I get through customs. I think the box is supposed to be unopened when it hits the border. Maybe someone can verify this. I'm picking up in Plentywood or I could have brought yours as far as Simpson unless the owner has to carry them across,I'm not sure about that. Thats if they come the same day.

You don't have to wait to get through customs. Open the boxes as soon as you get them at the post office and dispose of any birds that don't make it.

Go with some bottled water and sugar or vitamin water and make sure everyone gets a drink.

Then put them in the vehicle and drive across. You could an hour in line at customs just waiting to get in. The only time I did this it was over an hour in line and then almost an hour inside.

Thanks for the tip, that could make the diffence between living or dying. I know on my Meyer order they didnt even look at the boxes of chicks just the paperwork.

I don't think they ever look at the chicks themselves. They just want the paperwork.
So take a few extra minutes and get them all organized before you go across. You could even take a few extra small boxes and give them a little more room. They will be in your car so unlikely they will get chilled.

Good luck!!

I dont know everything I have been told is they cannot cross the border if they are over 72 hrs old, or have had any food or water. Once you cross you can feed and water them, I reccomend grow gel though, because a wet bird is a dead bird at that stage of the game and a moving vehicle will spill the water and get them wet.

Growgel needs to be ordered from the US, never found it in Canada. I have an extra little package here if you wanted me to send it to you.
Basically it is just a vitamin/mineral/probiotic gel, it comes as a powder, you add water to it and then it becomes a gel they pick at, gets them hydrated and a boost to get them to where you are going.

The best place is Cutler supply, if you order the large bag and divide it up it is much more economical. The smaller packages are great for on the go, but you could easily make them out of the larger package.
Here is a direct link.

Hidden River is correct, Although chances are that the customs people will not look at the chicks but if they do and it looks like you fed them they could stop them from coming in. Chances are most border people are not even aware of many of the rules pertaining to bringing poultry across the border. You ask why can't the chicks be fed while still in the States. When the farm who provides the chicks has their farms inspected for certain diseases and the USDA vet fills out the health papers they are saying that when the chicks left the farm they were not infected but if after the chicks left the farm and you gave them infected or contaminated feed then you could in essence be bringing a disease into Canada from the States but if you wait until you entered Canada and then fed them feed and it happened to be contaminated then the disease was already in Canada. I also agree that GroJel is the way to go. If you ask the shipper to send it with the chicks they will charge you very little and send you a small amount in powder form and once you have crossed the border then pull over and mix a cup of bottled water with it and it instantly expands and becomes like a Jello substance which is packed full of vitamins and electrolytes as well as other good stuff and it is lime green which really attracts the attention of the chicks. It prevents them from becoming dehydrated as well as giving their immune systems a jump start. One small pack will feed up to 100 chicks and after using it the first time I purchased a large bag which will feed up to 2000 chicks. They claim even if you don't ship your chicks it is a good thing to give it to your day olds to give them a good start.
