I heard the interview on As it Happens, they voted to phase out caged laying hens and crated sows.It sounded wonderful but I'm not sure how realistic it is,he said it was an oppertunity for small farms to supply eggs, from what I read the most layers a farm can have without a quota is 300,supply management is in place to protect factory farms from competition either from our southern neighbours or small producers.I read an article saying going from 300 layers to 6oo ,the quota would cost $45,000,in this system there's no place for small producers. There's other problems such as trying to house large numbers of birds in a free run system in our climate,I think just the number of eggs a co-op that size would need makes it a good idea but not possible. As for pigs 20 years ago they're were 8-10 guys around here producing 4-500 market hogs a year in an open system, they're all gone replaced by Hutterites and mega-farms that have no livestock,at least here it can't come back. One thing I found a little strange they came across as being progressive but Calgary is still a city where even a few back yard are not allowed
