Gotland sheep...(and have two ewe lambs and an unrelated ram lamb, he is unbelievably friendly and cuddly!)

The Gotland Sheep is a medium-sized, luster long wool sheep with clean head and legs. Curious, bold, and having an alert appearance with fine bone and good breadth and depth of body. Ranging in shades of near silver to charcoal black, this breed has exploded in popularity due in part to its considerable contribution in the Lord of the Ring movie series where the fleece of Gotland sheep was woven into the magic elven cloaks. Head and legs are generally solid black. Lamb birth coat is black, becoming gray within several months. Both sexes are polled. Ewes generally weigh from 120 to 155 pounds. Rams are heavier weighing 165 to 190 pounds at mature body weight. The ideal height range for mature Gotland ewes is 25.5 to 30 inches; for mature Gotland rams is 29.5 to 32 inches at the withers. Fleece is fine, long, lustrous, and dense, with clearly defined curl and staple, and soft to the touch. It is typically 29 to 34 microns in diameter at 18 months of age, as measured midside at the last rib. Lamb's wool is typically in the low to mid 20s micron range.

The picture below is from the web, my ewes and ram lamb are only 7 months old and I just haven't managed a picture yet. They aren't purebreds.. they are 7/8ths and one ewe is half gotland; half blue faced leister, but still all long wool sheep. Their fibre really does have lustre..and the lambs are quite a bit more steel grey/blue than the adult pic below.

Congrats! I too purchased a 1/2 Gotlland/Blue Faced Lecister ewe lamb in addition to 4 Blue Faced Leciester ewes. I sold out of my Shetlands this year and bought some Dorsett x commercial ewe lambs and a reg'd BFL ram (Dylan)with a couple 3/4 BFL ewe lambs and two merino x ewes . I was planning on going straight commerical but after seeing and touching BFLs wool I was hooked and added some regd ewes to my flock

oh how wonderful. I have been interested in this breed for fiber and have not been able to find any. Where did you get them? Did you have to import them? Are yours from the Chase, BC flock?

I have also been looking for Lincoln Longwool sheep in Canada. I would love to find some.

So when will we be seeing your first magic eleven cloak? If you have a waiting list please put me down for a cloak of invisibility. I have always wanted one.

Yes, my sheep are from Ranfurly at Chase. Nice folks and wonderful set up. I wanted the gotlands after reading an article in Wild Fibers magazine and like you, I want them for the fibre - going to learn to spin this winter (am a hand weaver already).

I would love to find Wenlysdales, if only to see them in person. Way too much fun.

Excellent! Ranfurly, where I got the gotlands, also raises BFL, wonderful sheep. I just love the wool... completely taken with them. There are some gotland breeders in Montana, Oregon and Washington, so perhaps some imports are in my future!!
All good.

YOU made me laugh right out loud... way too funny. I didn't know about the gotlands in Lord of the Rings until I saw that blurb on some website. Be assured, your the first on my list for cloaks of invisibility!!!
