I did the twice-a-day watering during one winter when I was selling about 30 dozen eggs a week, and it didn't seem to affect the egg production. I was forced to do it because the new puppy decided he liked chewing on the extension cord that went over to the coop, the one that the waterer de-icer plugged into, so I had to 86 it and start packing water instead.

I now have a well-insulated coop so only use a heat lamp if the temperature outside is below about minus 15 C, and then just use it in the pens with the silkies and frizzles during the night. I have chosen breeds with combs that don't freeze, like the Chanties and the Ameraucanas, as I have been trying to get less labor-intensive in the winter. I use the 100-watt red floodlights when it's not too cold, but when it gets down into the lower sub-Zs, those 250-watt infrareds pack a punch, although the Hydro meter does tend to reflect that in a month!

Thanks for the tip on Princess Auto. I went all over Armstrong and Kamloops last week trying to find a red infrared replacement bulb for my frizzle chicks, and ended up having to buy a package of 2 for $24.99 at the feed store. Never thought about the Princess....

I have an infra red heater, like the one you linked to Sue. It is on our porch and we used it a couple of times in the summer on a cold evening. I wonder if it will heat a room though, not just the area infront of it....does anyone know? I too have a single combed breed (new to me) that I might have to add a little heat to the room to help out from frozen big combs. Time will tell if the combs get too big. Anyone know about the style that Sue spoke of and that Coopslave called it a gazebo heater? It is called a radiant heater? Right? What does that mean? The question is:

Does this style of heater heat the air and circulate, or just the air that is right infront of the heater? Anyone? Need to know....always, a need to know. Have that beautiful day, CynthiaM.

I found an online customer review for this type of heater here:
http://www.amazon.com/Optimus-H-5210-Infrared-Quartz-Radiant/product-reviews/B000GG8DWA

It says in part:

"This review is from: Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater (Kitchen). very warm ... They don't heat the room air very well--they only heat what they are pointed at. This one has 2 ..."

So it looks like it is the same as those round parabolic heaters my neighbour has in her trailer, you have to have it pointed at what you want heated. HTH, have a great day!

The infrared heater is designed to warm the object in front of them, not heat the air.

Has anyone tried the infrared heater from Costco? It has to sit on a shelf. It's like a dish heater I guess. I used that and two oil heaters in my kennel last winter and they did really good at keeping it warm.
I wonder if I could try it in the coop? My hubby is insulating and making the ceiling lower before winter hits. This is my first year with chickens and wintering chickens so I'm finding this thread very useful Smile

TripleJ have you tried the COOKIE TIN water heater. I saw it and am going to make one this winter, although we don't get a lot of freezing weather, looks easy and will do the trick I think.
