Okay so I'm not sure if this is in the right section or not and its probably a dumb question but what do you light with clear or red lights?
When you bought your bulbs last how much did you pay for them?
I recently had to replace my bulbs and was charged $24.00 for 2 clear and when I looked at the red bulbs they were $29.00 for 2 affraid I could be wrong but doesn't that seem a bit rich for light bulbs?

We use red for heat lamps but otherwise just an LED lightbulb for some light on dark dreary days. I got a package of LED bulbs at costco and they're pretty good. LED can be expensive but they work when its cold out unlike CFL's. You have to shop around for heat lamp bulbs but princess auto has the best price around here I think they were $5.99each last time I bought some.

bcboy does yours work when its cold? I have a flourescent like that in hubbys work shop (my tack/grain storage room LOL) and when temp dips below -15 it gives a teeny tiny glow at the ends of the tubes and if it's below -20 I get nothing at all Sad It's an insulated room on the shady side of the barn so when cold it's pretty dark in there. If yours works when cold maybe its just my tubes or something? Even the CFLs I have in the barn hallway are really dim when it's cold which is when I most need lights.

My fluorescents work when it is cold. They just take a bit to warm up.

I use CFLs for white light. Full spectrum might be better. I use red lights from Princess Auto as they seem to have the best price. I have both coops on a timer at present, but if it gets cold I turn the white lights off and on manually and run the red lights continuously.

Yes the same with mine. You can get cold weather electronic ballast that will do much better than magnetic for cold weather applications.

OK guess its just our flourescent light I want it out anyways because it's annoying to have no light. Also whoever installed the light switch did so upside down so last year I flipped the switch and it didn't light so played with it and a couple weeks or so later it warmed up and I found the light on. I growled at the kids for leaving lights on only to find it was me who'd left it on because the switch is upside down big OOPS. I hate fumbling around in the dark and cold so new light in Hubbys workshop (AKA my tack/grain room hehe) this summer

We have red hanging heat lamps but also have an LED light up high on the wall for dreary days and so I can see when I do last checks on the hens at night

I was using mine for heat source because I have a clear see thru roof. So the winter blues weren't anything I was worried about. I did need the heat a bit this year but it never got super Burr cold this year and my crew spent alot of time outside.

It was the price that was so bothersome. I will be shopping at Princess Auto more often, I usually do but have been going south and I have found they just don't have the selction like PG does. Guess I'm going north next time Banana

I don't light or heat my coops. Very poor, deprived mountain chooks here. They are on their own in the winter.
I do wear a head lamp when I go to do chook chores after dark, does that count? Laughing

I use compact florecent in most of the barn
they stay on 24 hrs a day and have no problems.
I also have a red heat lamp in the chicken coop
that I can plug in if it gets realy cold.
I also checked around for pricing and last
time it was princess auto that had the best prices.
Where did you get your with such high prices?

I also use the compact flourecents and they stay on 24 hours. They
don't come on in the cold temps we can get. i also have red heat lamps
over the chickens.

I'm with Coopslave. Do not provide artificial light to induce laying. Although I do have a low hanging red bulb to provide heat, but not much light. Right now it's over in the coner, above the chicks.

Be aware that no 'down' time seems to be related to higher incidents of feather picking.

My girls have stopped laying right now . The lights are not bright they
stay dim. . Maybe I don't have good lights. Some I bought at dollarama.
I haven't seen any feather picking.. The young orp pullets are just
starting to lay during the next week where the temps will be above -10
I will shut off the lights at night and hopefully everyone will start
laying again.

I hang a mechanics trouble light with a regular light bulb and have it on a timer so it comes on in the morning and late afternoon for a bit otherwise it is off. If it is really cold I use a red heat lamp over the water.
BCBoy I was noticing your roost design, does it work well. Could you post pictures from other angles it looks like it may be an interesting idea.

No light here either. Half of mine sleep in the coop, and half sleep outside on perches. The
Favorelle is ALWAYS outside, even if she's by herself. She's a leader, not a follower!

Also no down time from the light is not good for the lay cycle, it screws them up. They should have some hrs of darkness.

I could never leave a light on 24hrs. Leaving a light on when I leave a room drives me bonkers LOL I don't even know how someone could sleep with a night light on so I think everything needs dark to sleep and stay sane. I do need a light see that everything is ok though. There's so much that could be missed with a quick thin line of light from a flashlight. I'm not big on snuggling chickens so I do my checks on them and their coop at night before I go off to bed. However, if we're having dark dreary days I leave the light on for them during the day because too much dark drives me crazy too so I figure they'd enjoy some light during the day.

Perhaps I should leave the light on more often though cause they're only just starting to lay again after quitting in the fall Ugh! This winter has been pretty warm and I keep waiting for the insane cold and sunshine to hit but so far its just been dark, dreary and warmish just not warmish enough to melt all this snow!

I've had an exorcist puking kid so I'm very sure I'm not sane today Exclamation
