My husband and I went to Summerland for a well deserved holiday. We were only gone 4 days. Like responsible pet owners we had a friend come to take care of the cats (2) and chickens (38) and ducks (12). When we returned home there was a definite smell of cat urine in the house. On searching we discovered that one of the cats (9 years) and (11 years) spade females had wet on the dogs bed (the dog got to go to Summerland). I am sure that it was the older cat and she was really ticked off that she did not get to accompany us on our mini vacation (first one in 4 years). My question is what can we do with her or them? My husband has offered to help our friends rebuild their deck on the Thanksgiving long weekend. We will be taking the dog but cannot take the cats as friend's have a very viscious male cat. Any suggestions?

The first thing you need to do is rule out an infection -UTI . When it is painfully to urinate cats will look for a soft spot. Once you rule out a physical problem then you can look at behavior . Are both cats using the same litter box ? I have 2 cats in the house and I have 2 litter boxes in the house in different spots. If I bring home a foster usually a pregnant momma from whisker rescue, I have a cat that won't go downstairs to use the litter box and she will pee on the dog beds. When I am cat fostering I have a litter box up and down at my house. When you are away I would pick up the dog bed and introduce another litter box. There is nothing like the smell of cat pee!

In case you need something to eliminate the smell, Orange a-peel works wonders. Well dot ca will even ship it free, though a bottle is around $22. Since it is the only thing that keeps my washer from stinking up the whole house, and a bottle lasts about a year, I feel it is worth every penny.
We used to use it in our carpet cleaner. It works great on skunk smells, cat urine, in fact, I've not found a smell it won't remove.
Hope you solve your cat's urinary issues Smile

Well, both cats tested out fine...no bladder infections and no other physical problems. Vet feels that we have a cat or cats with behavioral problems. What can I do, spank her, I think not.

Thanks Auntie Evil for the orange a peel suggestion, I ordered one this morning. I have washed the dog bed twice, the first time tide, borax and vinegar, the next time in tide and it is hanging on the line. Will wash it again when I get the orange-a-peel. Anyone know a cat psychologist?

Cats can be so vindictive.
Hopefully moving the bed and adding a litter box will help. Hopefully she doesn't decide your bed is the next target!
Good luck!
