Is there a way to sex 8-10 week Australorps by any other method than patience? I'd love to know if they will be keepers or dinner before I keep hand feeding them clover! One day I think they are all girls because of thier build, the next day all boys because of thier combs, next day girls cause they are so darn cute, next day boys because of thier behavior. Now today maybe two of each. The suspense is killing me. I have not figured out how to download pics yet but will see if I can get some up. They are 8-10 weeks old, no pointy feathers in the hackles yet with largish pink combs and waddles, but not as big as some younger boys of other breeds.

This will likely not help you.

I use Australorps to mix with others, creating Aussie mutts. As a general rule, the ones that grow the biggest tails at 2 to 5 weeks, those are GIRLS.

When crossed, the informal rule is that the girls grow tails first and the boys have stumpy bums. How this might apply to pures, I've never noticed.

Australorps if they have combs and waddles at 8-10 weeks they are your boys for sure. Girls I find do not develop much of a colored comb till they are at least 14 weeks or more.
Go with combs first, seperate them out, those are your boys. Later on then a few of the smaller combed ones may turn into boys but rarely will a larger comb chick turn into a girl. Smile

The combs and wattles are Light pink, not red like the other boys, and are not as big as some of the 2 week younger boys like the lone copper marans (of course a roo) or the barnevelder. And other than they act like a little mob when together, there is nothing else male about them. No upright stance, they run and scatter when startled, they have all plump round feathers and don't have the size in feet or body that others boys have though they are big chicks. If they are boys based on wattles and combs, they are all boys - 4 out of 4. That makes me sad. Guess they all go to the dinner pen, no more clover by hand for them. Crying or Very sad It's amazing how different the breeds can be, the copper marans and barney boys are all boy, no doubt in my mind what sex they are.

This is my first go at pictures, hope it works. 3 are 2.5 months, the larger is two? weeks older. And I've thrown in a pic of the cuckoo marans roo (2.5 months) for comparison.

Cuckoo marans roo the same age, isn't he handsome?

Boys or girls, any thoughts?

Do they all look like Roos?

Laughing Crying or Very sad Freezer pen for them I guess. I have one younger Australorp chick 4 weeks old who has feathered up the same as the welsummer girls, so hoping I still get one girl. Really wanted to have Australorp hens to compare with the other breeds with regards to laying ability, and also wanted the variety of colours for the egg basket. And I LOVE the Australorp Roos, the way they chatter and talk...but can't justify keeping a boy with no girls.

I have one Australorp banty and one full sized Ausralorp cross with... soooomething.

I found my Banty was the first to start laying after being removed from the conditions she was in before I got her. She was a week earlier than all the other birds and has laid an egg every day since I got her, traceable up until the great egg hunt began a few weeks ago (thank you turkeys).

That period, I should note, excludes when she went broody. That was a 3 week set and a 2 week raising time she wasn't laying. She, however, started laying at night when she had the babies under her and was done with them by 3 weeks.

I shouldn't try to guess at that age but maybe there is one roo . Going strictly by the comb size.

I know they have me baffled! Everyone else except one barnevelder I have pretty much sorted, even the Americaunas. But these I just don't know. And one is 2 or 3 weeks older, came from an older bunch.

This new line of Australorps take much more time for me to determine the sex so I wouldn't send them to freezer camp just yet.

An update on these, I have not sent any to freezer camp yet...thankfully! Since the photos were posted, the three smaller (and younger by about two weeks) ones have only grown more to look like hens. The larger one changed alot, but the smaller ones didn't. The combs did not grow any more, the waddles are small, round and plump, feathers are round with no signs of boy saddles or hackles and shorter round bodies and smaller feet and legs. They are called the three amigos, where one goes, they all go. And the boys are doing the drop wing feather dance to these three. The bigger one is looking all rooster now...longer along the beak on waddle size, huge feet, and obvious pointy saddle and hackle. I'll try to post some new picks soon. Looking like one boy and three girls...to be confirmed when they lay eggs, or alternately when they start to crow.
