Thought I'd post here as a bit of an offshoot to our discussion about sick chicks/respiratory illnesses.
Hope that's not too confusing.
Tara you said:"One of the reasons you might see so many that say exhibition birds are non-productive...what indeed is the side affect of surviving a contact with CRD?? REDUCED PRODUCTION!!! So while not all birds die from being exposed to CRD, they suffer from very low production! Many show bird's lack of productivity is not from bad genetics, not from people more interested in fanciful feathers that are thought to be ignoring production...the very fact that bird to bird contact is done when showing...THAT would help explain to me how some exhibition lines are not as productive as birds not exposed to a venue where CRD would perpetuate and thrive to be passed along in the population."
That may be part of the problem but I don't think it would account for all of the differences between "show stock" and "production stock"
Tara you also said:
"As with coryza, survivors of CRD are carriers. This means they give the disease to other birds. Recall when the ILT vaccine saved the bird vaccinated but that bird then gave/shed the disease to other birds...that don't work out too well. Numerous exhibitors that did not vaccinate their birds for ILT, came home from the shows and had their flocks come down with ILT. I can count nine people I know that had their flocks wiped out because the immunization (giving the birds the disease to shed) caused them to survive but made them carriers. Very common happening here in Alberta in year's past."
So what do people think of the benefits of vaccinating now with LT-IVAX, the non shedding form of ILT vaccine? (As opposed to the older live forms used in the past)
Hope that's not too confusing.
