I have had these Emus for awhile now and seen the funniest thing today.
They were actually playing!

One would run down to the end of their pen a fast as they could,,,neck stretched out and just flying.
Would then run to the top of the pen and dance, kick their legs out and bob around.
Then the next one would go !!!! While the others watched .
They did this for a good 15 min.
Was the first time I have seen it and it was amazing!

They really have never shown me that they are that bright.
Wish I had the smarts to video it ….I just stood there watching dumb struck .

I love watching animals playing and interracting like that, there is something really special and intimate about it. It's moments like that that make me wonder what is actually going on silently between them in all the other times of the day when they appear numb or without intelligence.

Emus and Ostriches amaze, dazzle and terrify me. The very fact they are evolved from raptors makes me insanely afraid of them.

How do your emus handle the cold? I know the refuge in Moose Jaw (lou's I think?) has an ostrich and its juuuust beautiful. I was so surprised to see it here in the frigid prairies. They do well I guess, like chickens?

Sounds like they were having fun. Maybe they are competing getting ready for breeding season?

No I dont think so.
I watched that 2 months ago,totaly diff.
This was just out and out fun.

When breeding, they strut and bob ,but never run and kick up their heels Smile
Do not take turns and egg each other on.
Was the strangest thing and really something to see.

They seem to handle the cold really well. They have two shelters and really have only seen them use them in this last storm.
I stressed and worried and my vet said to leave them alone, they wlll use the shelters if they want.

I have three that are easy to handle, enter pen etc.
I have one that I am babysitting in a diff pen and its mean as heck.
I do NOT go in that pen.He will try and get me even through the fence so is fed and watered from outside.
