I have 6 meat turkeys and 4 of them have some degree of big swollen cheeks. Seems like it flared up overnight. Called the vet they gave me a med that's the equivalent to tetracycline I can't remember the exact name at the moment. This stuff hasn't worked at all. I have read Tylan is good. Do you guys recommend that or what would you use and where do I get it?

I have had success with tylan in the water (10 days) and injectable.

The big thing is to sepperate them as it is rather contagious.

Smell them. Do they stink? Is there discharge from ears, eyes, nose or corners of the mouth? Are they breathing with mouths open and a slight gurgle? That swollen look can be a sign of coryza, but there are usually other symptoms too.

I have a turkey hen that has had swollen cheeks for a couple of years. She is alive and well. Right now there are a couple of this year's hatch that have similar symptoms. I've been treating with Gallimycin or Erythromycin Water Soluble Powder.

Tylan works and so does BORGAL 5cc per gallon of water for 3 days and 1cc in a syringe pull in 4cc of water and direct into the mouth and it will be gone very fast.

Hope this is not to boring Borgal is exactly the same as Trivetran in fact it is made by the same company, Trivetran is prescrition only Borgal is over the counter at a vet office,

Link to trivetran http://www.drugs.com/vet/trivetrin-injection-can.html

Link to Borgal http://www.drugs.com/vet/borgal-can.html

Both of these drugs work better than I can stress the only difference is Borgal 21.00 for 100cc and the other about 100.00 for 100cc, I have never had trouble getting Borgal from my vet, I got some birds last year that ended up being very ill, the ones that did not die recovered in 3 days with borgal, they had sinusitus in a very bad way.

This is why turkey's, pheasants, and peafowl should not be kept with chicken or in pens that held chickens unless they have been cleaned and disinfected!!!
The question has come up over and over again, "Can I keep my turkey's with my chickens?), I say it's not a good idea, but then there is always those that say "I've been keeping my turkey's with chickens for years and there are no problems!". Blah, Blah, Blah!!! Well, here you go! Reason #1 why this should be avoided!!!

OK, now I have heard that a certain chicken disease can be controlled by housing a turkey with your chickens! Who has heard that? What is the disease?

I may be confused, but I do not see where the post said the turkeys were with chickens. I myself had two turkeys do this and they had never been with my chickens and their pen was built for them this summer so had never had chickens in it. Both of mine recoevered, I would clear the nasal passage a few times a day to allow it to drain. I didnt really use anything, but they werent very bad.

I also had three turkeys have this happen and they had not been housed with the chickens or actually even anywheres near them. They were about 100 yards between the pens. I was not so lucky and ended up loosing 2 of the three to this.

Lots of good advice. I do have the turkeys in the same building as my chickens and were raised with the chicks, chickens that I have. All the chickens look fine so not sure what happened. Coop is always fairly clean. They are hatchery commercial turkeys so maybe that has something to do with it. And they don't have any other symtoms just the puffy cheeks.

You can have the pens a mile away from each other, but if enter the turkey pen after you were in the with the chickens, there is that chance that you will bring in chicken poo. It can also be transferred from the water fonts and food dishes too if you move them around without disinfecting them with Vircon or at the least bleach. Sinusitis is usually transferred to turkeys and peafowl from chickens without the chickens showing any signs of the disease at all!

An update on treatment for "puffy cheeks":

I've been treating with Tylan. Giving the sufferers a measured amount by mouth (beak) three times a day. Seemed to reduce the swelling very quickly.

Tylan is available through a vet that deals with farm animals. Is an "off label" treatment for Sinusitis and airsaculitis. "Google" for more information.

On the chicken disease that might be controlled by housing with turkeys: Rumour says that turkeys get a form of Mereks that is the basis for the vaccine used on chickens. Might be true.
