Yesterday was such a fun, fun day!

My parents invited my daughters and I over so I could show my mom how to use her new bread machine. Of course, when they asked me over to teach her. They didn't tell me that it was an Antique Bread Machine. I was like, "You could do that mom! All you do is put the stuff in, and push the button. But you will probably want to bake it in the oven. Bread machines don't bake bread very good." Well, she still wanted me to show her how to do it, plus, she said she wanted to have a girls day at her house, with my sister and neice as well.

So yesterday we all headed over to my Mom's. Well, you can imagine my surprise when her bread machine turned out to be an antique, and that we were actually going to use it!

We didn't really know if you were supposed to start the bread in it or in a bowl, but we thought we would start the liquids in a bowl.

Anyways, here's how it went.... Enjoy!

So, we started the bread in my Grandmothers bread bowl that my dad remembers from when he was a kid. He remembers stealing the lid when he was a kid to play gladiators with and getting into big trouble. lol

Some flour was added to the liquid in the bowl to thicken it up. After the yeast was activated.

Then the started dough was added to the bread machine.

And some flour.

Next, Grandma starts to crank it, as the grand daughters look on.

The girls all had a turn cranking it while grandma added more flour.

The dough is mixed.

Then the dough was removed and put on the kneading table, and hand kneaded.

Everyone getting their hands in there!

My Mom, thrilled with the machine.

And the dough was turned back into the old bread bowl. My dad was so pleased about this.

When my parents purchased the bread machine. They promised to take a picture of the 3 generations with it.
Myself, my Sister, Mother, and our daughters.... Oh, and my sister is expecting, the first grandson! It's so exciting!

And some of the bread produced. It turned out beautiful.

It was decreed that this shall be a yearly event, right before halloween. It was a wonderful, fun day getting to spend it together. It was a celebration of my parents 38th anniversary, the kids also carved pumpkins, and I was surprised with a B-day cake! Plus we all went home with some bread and goodies!

You have a very interesting kitchen it is a dough maker and it dates back to mid to late 1800s, very rare and worth a fair bit to the right person I had one a few years ago in an estate and it sold for 1100.00, look at my web site [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

What a wonderful day!! Thank you for sharing. It makes me really yearn for my Mom and my sisters, all of whom are alive but nowhere near me (either emotionally or physically) and wish that we had been more into this type of activity together. My mom never even baked cookies, and now she's lost to us due to dementia.

Cherish every moment with your beautiful family of women (and your dad and the upcoming much-anticipated boy!!). I love you

That is quite the machine. I love the wood and it looks so well kept. I learned to make bread the first year my ex and I were married. We were paid before Christmas and no doubt spent too much on presents. After the third weekend in January we had enough money for either milk or bread. We bought the milk and I learned to make bread. I made bread on most Saturdays for quite some time. Occasionally I will make a loaf or two. It is wonderful that the 3 generations had the day together and enjoyed your sharing it with us through the wonderful photos.

Oh Silkie, what a beautiful day you spent with your woman-friends and the children. I have looked at the posts you have made of this event a couple of times, and knew that my reply would be somewhat lengthy and well thought-out!! Smiling that big smile.

Your Mother looks like she keeps a home where people just want to go to, bond and have family love stuff, like family dinners. I can feel that and I want you to speak of her a little more. I really do.

I am mother to my two girls. We spend days like those, but in different ways, my girls are 40 and 36 and we have girly times too. I know how much love went into that day of breadmaking, being that mamma too, I know exactly how you feel with you and your Sister with your dear Mother. Cherish those times, I know you do, but these are things that will be imprinted in your mind for the rest of your life -- those happy days, spent as an adult woman with your Mamma. Yay!! I am happy for you.

Your Father gave your Mamma a most beautiful gift. What a machine. So, it was a commercial unit, used way, oh so way back when. That is hard to imagine that even, way back so when, that someone had the notion to make a turner, to turn the products to make bread. What an incredible unit, with all the storage and the woodmanship that went into making it. Love it. Your Mamma should be pleased as punch!!

I love your stories. I love your pictures. I love the pictures of the three generations of girls, and the thought that there will be a boy dude coming, so coooool!! My Mother is long gone, nigh onto over 30 years ago. But if she were alive, I know that I would be spending happy days with her too. We did that many, many years ago, but as a mature woman now, I would have so much more to offer this great lady. I clearly recall the tomato sandwhiches, made with garden chives, Salad Bowl Salad Dressing (can't even find that brand anymore, guess it is gone), on toasted bread. Those were our Mummy Dearest times, oh so long ago.

Happy days, your family looks complete, happy and whole!! Have a beautiful day, CynthiaM.

Thank you very much Pops! Smile

Thank you, too for the other comments, everyone! I enjoyed reading them. There's just something about baking with family that brings you a little closer together, and it makes for wonderful memories, that will come back to you at unexpected times, like the smell of a spice, or of yeast rising... The time spent together is special.

One thing that, I think would have been even neater is if my Grandmother was there. She lives away from us, but someday, when she's up visiting, well have to do it again I think. She's a wonderful cook too.

Cynthia, thank you very much for your comments. It made my eyes well up. My mother is a very special lady. Her home is always open and inviting. Thankyou so much for sharing about your mom, too. Mothers are so very special.
