What's your experiences? I'm looking for 2-3 utility laying hens that don't drive me up the wall with psychotic tendancies. I'd prefer a large egg, otherwise I'd consider the dorking.

Thanks for any input!

I know, but I'm looking for a white egg! I have one leghorn x and her egg looks so pretty in my eating eggs.. I thought a couple more wouldn't hurt Razz

I have a few EE's too but all lay lovely green eggs.

Are there Anconas in Canada? They are a nice white egg layer and not quite as crazy as many of them. The bantams I had layed almost the same size egg as my light sussex so I imagine standard birds would have a good egg.

I have never been a leghorn fan and haven't had anything to do with ASs. Good luck finding what will suit you.

I have never seen an Ancona in person, but I'll keep my eyes open! I'm not much for the leghorn personality either.. its all about the white egg!! LOL I would like something I could maybe find as a sexed pullet if possible. No urgency, I was just thinking about it today when I was washing eggs. Smile

I know this is not the breed you asked about
But my Polish lay a nice medium white white egg. They are not real large eggs but 2 can make a omelet LOL

Love, love, love my Light Brown Leghorn hens. They lay the most amazing large pure white eggs and will lay well for years and are incredibly beautiful too. Don't have any pyscotic tendencies other than for the first year may be a bit flighty but it depends how often the birds see you. Mine see me often in the coop so tend not to be flighty. For the first time in years I actually had 2 hens go broody this year, very unsual and probably won't happen again for years.

I agree with Heather, when I have light brown leghorns they were awesome birds. As well as my Exchequer leghorns. I find a lot of it is how they are raised. Purchasing POL leghorns that have been raised with minimal contact their whole upbringing is what makes them as crazy as they are. Their personalities are already a bit flighty but I find if I raise them from young they are much different than buying as POL.

The Appenzellers I have lay like crazy, but their eggs are medium size.

Spitzhaubens lay a medium sized white egg. They are flighty when young but can become very tame when handled lots. I have had a few people comment on how tame their Spitz are that they bought from me. I'm trying to breed them to the Swiss standard and I'm still getting lots of pet quality pullets with the polish type crests which I sell as layers.

The nicest white eggs I ever got were from my Lakenvelders. Perhaps not as big or as numerous as a Leghorn but they were perfect. Never a thin or misshapen shell.

Minorcas are good too.
