For the first time last week, we shipped out chicks! We had two orders to go out, one to Edmonton and the other all the way to Toronto - a big flight from Victoria! Over the winter my dad built me some pretty skookum shipping boxes, they are totally reuseable and good for a decent number of chicks, probably 60+. These orders were for around 30 chicks each, and they fit nicely into 3 compartments with some room to spare. I was so anxious to be sending my little babies half way around the country but things at the airport went very well, super smooth and they were very good. It's not the first time they have shipped chicks and they took good care of them!

So pleased to report that all the babies made it to their destination, even after the little ones to Toronto had a 13 hour day! It's been 4 days now since they arrived at their new homes and still not a single death. I am so pleased cheers

That’s great news Briarwood. Smile The thought of shipping live chicks would make me anxious too. Very glad to hear everything worked out. Also good to know flying live birds can be done smoothly and safely. cheers

Here are the shipping crates:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Each partition is labelled with type of chicks. Shavings for bedding, apples and chick starter are put in each compartment

Chicks sorted and in their compartment!

And the lid is screwed down and we are off to the airport!

No it's just easier for us to use the wood ones don't have to worry about getting them here and whether or not it would meet Canadian airline standards. The wooden one we use are built to the specifications from the airlines and we have enough stockpile for another spring too Smile we looked into a couple different cardboard options but by the time we bought them and paid for shipping them to us it wasn't a big difference in dollar. Smile
