Backyard New York chickens have been laying eggs that have elevated lead levels.

Here is another link for us all.

It lists the micrograms per kilo of body weight for people that have different effects.

It might just be easiest to have your eggs tested, if in doubt. Our two barns, and the house were of an era where lead paint was used. Surprisingly, our water tests free of lead. It's about 50 bucks to have our eggs tested, so I haven't since the water was OK. They can apparently be tested where water tests are done. here, that's any community access site...PEI.

Its so sad to think that these people looking for a healthy, home-grown food alternative may have to think twice about using their own eggs. I guess this is another example of the health risks that result from industry and manufacturing. Who knows how long that contamination will be there in the soil.

If chickens can have that much built up in their eggs, how much is deposited in the humans that live there? I think the eggs are the least of their worries.
