I have a question about a drake that we picked up at an auction last weekend...we just needed something small to give my hen a little buddy for the winter, but I'm just curious as to what breed he is..or if he's just a mix. The description on his box said Mini Rowan...possible mud hen. None of that made sense to me and i didn't think that Rowans came in "mini". Any ideas?

Could also be a Rouen/Mallard cross. There are domestic Mallard lines.

Thanks Tara! We absolutely do love him...within a couple minutes of bringing him home last weekend, he was happily following the others down to the pond and back to the pen at night. It was as if he's always been here and he has a nice calm, quiet, fantastic personality. We are new to ducks this year, and not knowing anything about their genetics, curiousity was getting to me. Breeding and showing rabbits for the last few years has perhaps made things a little cut and dry for me...everything must be of the same certain breed and must conform to standards...the strive for "perfection"..lol. But he is a beautiful drake and he is a very happy addition, so what he "is", should be far less important Smile

Fowler, i did see a couple Mallards at that sale..they were very pretty! They just weren't as "shiny"...I'm like a magpie, i see something shiny and i have to pick it up and bring it home..lol.

Hmmm..that is interesting, I wasn't even aware that you are required to have a permit for certain waterfowl. I left halfway through the sale (that way i left with only ONE duck, not 10 and a handful of chickens..lol), so I'm curious now as to whether anything was said in regard to permits at all. Those things are good to know!
