Was thinking about this today, for unknown reasons.

My dad used to say: "There are three things you never loan to anyone. Your wife, your gun and your horse."

What do you suppose this means?

Those three items should only ever be sold, not loaned. Because any of them will have a history with them when you get them back that is irreversible or not worth the hassle.

My favorite horses saying is:

"One white foot—buy him. Two white feet—try him. Three white feet—look well about him. Four white feet—go without him."

...but it sure is easier to trim their hooves!

My favourite is

"Don't ride a free horse to death."

Essentials of survival, what no "man" can do without, back when. Personally, I love my horse dearly, would never loan her to anyone, no one gets to touch my shotgun, but the husband might be in trouble on occasion.

UNO I would say the saying at least as far as the horse and gun go is they will end ip coming home with issues worse than they left with!!

A good horse can be ruined by someone else.
So can a good wife.
If this happens, you cant loan out your gun, because you'll need to shoot the SOB.

I always thought he meant that if you know where your wife, your gun and your horse are, then you won't find yourself in unexpected trouble. BUt if any of those things fall into the hands of someone who makes a bad decision, then you can be held accountable for NOT keeping better tabs on what is yours to care for, and what was most valuable to you.

I think too some of it was based, maybe just vaguely, on the fact that as a child, my dad starved, and when he had a good horse to go hunting on, and a good gun to shoot something, (later a good wife to cook and make a home for him) that you better keep the things that truly matter close to your heart and they are not ever to be casually loaned out. That the difference between being homeless and hungry or not could be summed up with a horse, a gun and a wife.

I think any man with a good wife, horse and a rifle can consider themselves very rich and if you add good health to it, then well..you got it made.
