I am soooo sad. We are missing two horses. Now it's not uncommon for them to disappear for month at a time in the bush (there is over fifty acres for them to roam in), so didnt think too much of it really. Well I know for a fact I haven't seen my horse for about a month for sure, and Lance was pretty sure he hadn't seen his horse for about that too. Sure enough, all the horses and donkeys came up last night, except for those two. So out we went trekking...... found the remains of mine. Looks like a cougar attack. Couldn't find the other, but one horse wouldn't be out there on his own, so assuming the worst right now.

So needless to say, I didn't sleep much last night. All I could picture was my horse's skeleton.

Gawd. It's all just been so depressing lately.

Claire I am so sorry to hear that , you have been through so much this last year. You deserve much better. Is the pic of the horse on this post the one that was discovered dead? He sure is a nice looking one. Sometime when you are on your way to Calgary you should stop by. I am surprised that a cougar would try to take your horse over one of your alpaca's. You would think that the alpaca's would be a safer kill.

Claire, sorry to hear about the Horses.
The big cats can be trouble.
We dealt with them while I was growing up.
Our friend was hired by the Gov to go after them with his hounds.
He was kept very busy .

Does your house insurance cover the horses? I know it doesn't bring them back but I sure hope so. Now I am worried for your children who probably play outside often in the warm weather. If a cougar whose primary food is deer is able and willing to take down a horse then a small child would seem easy prey. Please be extra careful and make sure that you always have a big gun handy.

I am so sorry to hear about your horses. The loss of any animal that
a person has had for any length of time is very difficult. My heart
goes out to you and hope for the safe return of the other horse.

I am sooo sorry to hear this!! I know how heartbreaking it can be to loose a horse you are expecting to loose due to age, much less one to circumstances like this. Will pray the other lost soul will find his way back home.

Thank you.

Yes it was the horse in the picture, his name was Divine, a retired race horse. His temperament makes him pretty irreplaceable. Broke for both riding and pulling a cart, calm, gentle giant. I was the only one tall enough to get up in a saddle on him!

Dan. The girls have strict orders to not go outside to play like that anymore. NO field, or out back. Winter was so long, and not alot of deer on the property this winter for some reason. Hopefully the cat has already moved on. I guess we will know soon, just watch the rest of the horses.

At least it didn't get the girls' horses--- those are so broke to death that I honestly couldn't even afford to start looking to replace them.

Where are you located from Cochrane? I grew up just north of the
Spy Hill Jail and attended school in Cochrane. Hate to admit it but
I graduated grade 12 there in 1975. The population was just over
1000 and our graduating class was less than 60. I knew many of the
locals there at that time but Cochrane has grown into a large
community since then. Be nice to know if you live near anyone that I
knew out there.

Again I am sorry to hear of your loss.

Just North of the Westbrook school.... Place on the east side of the highway with the yellow quonset. Husband grew up here, his family has been here for almost forever. (McRae's and Hilton's) He grew up with the Kinch's and the Hindes', so you know he was up to no good most of the time.

Nice of you to call Cochrane a community. That is about the last thing it really is. No community feeling around here anymore.

I know right where you are. I know what you are saying about the
pack your husband travelled with they were pretty wild.
I wish I could remember first names but there was one Kinch (Doug?)
older than me and a Hines a couple of years younger. Seems to me
that Norma Jean Bigger married into the Kinch clan. When I attended
Cochrane school the Westbrook area only attended from grade 10-12
so did not get to know them as well as the keds that attended 1-12.

Yes sorry to say when I was there it was a community. Grew up with
Robin and (Linda?) MacKay of ice cream fame. It is sad to see how
things go from community to just another city as people move out of
the large centers to get away from things and just create new things.
