I was just wondering what everyone is paying for chick starter these days? Seems the prices down here have gone up quite a bit from last year....
Also seems to be a variety of protein in starters, so what do you use and why?

This will be an interesting thread. I haven't had to buy any yet this year, but it is not good to hear the prices have gone up.

I know I have been shocked at how much the dog food at Costco had gone up in the last 2 years. About $6 a bag, not sure what is going on!!

It is getting very expensive to feed all the dogs we have. I hate to think of the big hatchings I want to do this year may just be to expensive cause the prices of starter has gone up too. Sad

Here are some prices I called around about today.
UFA is $14.69 with 20% potein in 25 kg bags
Co-op is $14.45 with ? protein (he said 14% but I dont believe that) in 25 kg bags
Peavey mart is $13.99 with I think it is 16% protein (it is a starter/grower combo) in 25 kg bags

I called my feed mill near me and they can make me chick starter in 18%, 20% or 22% goes about $12-$14 per bag and I have to buy 40 bags to get them to make it up for me since it is not normally stocked...

I have read that feeding too high of protein can cause crooked toes, not sure if that is true or not? I know turkeys require a bit higher protein, as do guineas/ducks, so not sure which to get? I would to the 22% if I knew it wouldnt harm my chicks then I could use it for everything.

We start all our birds on 27% Turkey Starter, except the ducks because it is medicated (amprolin).
haven't had any issues with crooked toes.

Except we have 1 EO hen called 'Toes' because her right foot has 2 odd toes.

Last year our supplier suggested we buy more than a 2 week supply because the price was going up.
We are paying $14 and change per 25kg bag. usually get 10% off if we pickup > 5 bags of feed.
Which we usually do.

We have all birds on whole hen scratch (viterra) and toss in a bit of 17% layer pellets for ducks, geese and chickens or 22% turkey grower for the pheasants and turkeys.

would be nice to buy bulk though and cut costs.

Wheat is 6.30 bushel?

Everything is started on Masterline Turkey starter 25% 12.95 25KG and I have never had any issues at all with any of the birds, then they are put on Masterline Turkey grower 22% 11.75 for 25KG,

I just ordered feed this morning. Chick Starter 18%. 1 tote bag - 2000pounds ( I think?) and it was $333. Plus they charge $30 for the bag... So $363 I guess.

So about $9/bag if I calculated it that way.

Don't you use Landmark Ty? Funny how mine was priced differently? Maybe because I am doing it in bags instead of a mini tote? Also I requested 20% and that was a bit more, but still, for 18% they quoted me $12 per bag... Could be where they get their grain from too being different locations...

Yep, mine is Landmark. I think I were to get 40 bags in bags - they would be $10 or $10.50ea ish.
