What to do with a monogamous rooster???

Well, my big beautiful Buff Orpington rooster has a girlfriend.

She is the only one allowed to roost beside him and night, and she is the only one getting regular (ahem!) attention! I had to put a saddle on her as she is starting loose some feathers from all the action.

I checked some random eggs in his flock of ladies for fertility, and it seems that some hens are not laying fertile eggs. So I reduced his harem down to 6 from 9 and started removing the favorite hen during the day and only putting her back in at night. I'm hoping this might encourage him to be a bit more of a Tiger Woods kinda guy!

Anyone else have experience with a roo that prefers not to play the field?

How long has he been with the other hens? Sometimes it can take a month or two for breeding groups to get established. Removing the favorite hen is what I would do. He only needs to see her once every 2-3 days to maintain fertility. So hopefully he will do what he is supposes to do now.

Put lots of beer in his water dish

One thing I might try would be to separate him from the hens he isn't interested in for 2 weeks.

When you put them back in, he might see them as new hens and feel the need to make them his own (as it were).

It's good to get male advice on this matter.

KRL, they have all been living together for almost 4 weeks now, so I guess they are all feeling established. Yes, I think I will take his special girl away from there for a few days instead of putting her back in each night. Hopefully he will start to notice all the other lovely ladies.

It is pretty sweet he has a special girl he's true too. My 'mate anything with feathers and a pulse' roos could take lessons!

Back to your roo. I agree with Kyle. Take away his favorite girl. She can always go back to him in a couple weeks. Let us know how things work out!
